Love God Greatly: Jesus Our Everything

DAY 13 OF 30

The first mention of priests in Scripture is in Genesis 14, with the account of Melchizedek, king of Salem. Melchizedek was a priest of the Most High God. He was king of Salem, the city later (and today) known as Jerusalem.

Melchizedek’s priesthood was different than the Levitical priesthood established through Aaron. Melchizedek’s genealogy is not recorded in Scripture, but what is explained was the way he was a priest, an advocate for the people before God.

In discussing the priesthood of Melchizedek, the author of Hebrews displayed the differences between the type of high priest we have in Christ and the type of high priest that existed under the Levitical system. Jesus is the High Priest appointed by God, not by His lineage. He is unique from the Levitical priesthood because He is able to go before God on our behalf and cleanse us from our sin because He has no sin.

Jesus’ priesthood is different. He is our eternal advocate because He is eternal. He forgives our sins because He knew no sin. He is our High Priest, always going to God on our behalf.

Jesus, You alone are worthy of the office of High Priest. You are different than all of the priests before You because You alone can forgive sins. Thank You for being my advocate and for eternally going before the Father on my behalf. Amen.
