No Waste in the Waiting

DAY 3 OF 4

Kiss the Waves

“I have learned to kiss the waves that throw me against the Rock of All Ages.” Charles Spurgeon

I have been dealing with chronic pain for years from a herniated disc in my lower back. I have good days, bad days, and really bad days.

When I am swimming in the sea of my suffering, I am doing my best to keep my head above the water as the strong waves of pain crash over me again and again.

I have cursed those waves. I have prayed to be saved from those waves, to be carried onto the shores of healing. Yet I continue to struggle.

I sometimes wonder if I will have the strength to keep treading in these difficult waters. I am tired of the current pushing me back and the undertow pulling me under.

In 2 Corinthians 12, Paul has been suffering from unrelenting physical pain and this is what the Lord proclaimed, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.”

Paul’s response was, “Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me.”

What God is showing me in this season of waiting for my physical healing is that He is still good even in the midst of my suffering. Jesus is calling me to grab hold of the life preserver of his grace.

For when I am weak, then I am strong.

I no longer need to despise the waves. I am encouraged to kiss the waves; to greet them like an old friend who has come to visit, to welcome them, and know that they have come to me for a reason and a purpose.

I don’t need to flail my arms, furiously kick my legs, or panic when the waves crash. God is sovereign in my pain. I will continue to pray for a healing, and I will wait.

The Rock of Ages is with me and I know that he is faithful.

His grace is sufficient, so patiently I will wait.
