The Third Person

DAY 1 OF 5

Who is the Holy Spirit?

Often, as Christians, we can believe the misconception that the Holy Spirit is an impersonal force or power.

To clear up this misconception and to understand who the Holy Spirit is, it’s important that we know 2 things:

  1. The Holy Spirit is God

  2. The Holy Spirit is personal

As Christians, we believe that God is triune: Father, Son and Spirit; we believe God is three in one, and one in three. We see the divinity of the Holy Spirit attested to all throughout Scripture.

Primarily, we can believe that the Holy Spirit is God because the Bible tells us He has all of the attributes of God. The Bible also  reveals to us that the Holy Spirit is eternal, that He is omnipotent, omniscient and omnipresent (all powerful, all knowing and everywhere), all of which are attributes unique to God. If these attributes are true of the Holy Spirit too, then we can believe with confidence that the Holy Spirit is God.

Yet, the Bible doesn’t stop there. As well as telling us that the Holy Spirit is God, the Bible also reveals that the Holy Spirit is personal.

The Bible teaches us that the Holy Spirit is personal when it ascribes personal characteristics to Him such as emotions and a will to make decisions. The Bible also tell us of personal actions the Holy Spirit does such as speaking, interceding, teaching and guiding.

This truth that the Holy Spirit is personal matters. John 14:17 shows us that we are designed to have a relationship with the Spirit instead of thinking we can treat the Spirit as a power to be harnessed in order to accomplish our own purposes.

The Holy Spirit is a Person who has personal relationships with believers. He is the one who will never leave you and He wants to be in an intimate relationship with you.

Take some time today to reflect on who the Holy Spirit is. As you seek to know the Holy Spirit on a personal level, the Bible promises you will experience life and peace. Invite the Holy Spirit into your life today.
