The Power of Prayer

DAY 3 OF 5

 Day 3: Let us Ask

Prayer is the way of access to the divine, to the supernatural; it is the way to reach an answer to our most profound needs. Prayer quiets the soul in the most difficult and adverse circumstances that a person can face. It isn’t a skill. Rather, it is to put my trust in the hands of God, who is able to make the impossible become possible outside of my own rational comprehension.

Jesus, after teaching the Father’s Prayer in chapter 6 of Matthew, speaks to his listeners that were on the mountain about three different actions which relate to prayer: “Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives, and the one who seeks finds, and to the one who knocks it will be opened.” The first level of prayer that Jesus speaks about is to “ask,” which is the most basic: it is the call to fulfill a need--it is to say, “I need something!”

More than anyone, God knows our nature and knows that many times we draw near to him out of need because we are in the middle of crisis (personal problems, addictions, fights or marital conflicts, economic crisis, loss of work, ect.), and he hopes that, as his children, we will seek out his presence. Children know to ask. They know how to touch the heart of their father. It is part of their nature. The essence of Father God is to give. If he gave us Christ, then he gave us all things with him.

Our requests can be many and can encompass many areas of our lives: spiritual, financial, physical, or be related to our purpose. But if we don’t put our need in God, this can be a bad approach.  We are supposed to have the certainty that in God all of our needs are met. He is the provider and healer; he gives us peace, security, strength, joy and all that we are able to ask. But something important about asking things of God is that we do so  in the name of Jesus. The marvelous heritage of being sons of God is that he allows us to pray in the name of his Son.

We are also meant to ask with faith--that is key. For it is faith that moves the hand of God our Father. He is attentive to our clamour. Let’s ask with faith, let’s ask in the name of Jesus, and we will see extraordinary miracles
