Prayer Basics

DAY 6 OF 7

In the Middle East, shepherds led their sheep from the front.  They called them by name, knew their weaknesses and put their own lives at stake to protect and care for their flock. Sheep will recognise and follow only that known and beloved voice. In John 10:1-5 Jesus explains that He is our good Shepherd and that He calls us to follow him. Today we focus on truly listening, in order to learn to discern God ‘s voice more clearly and to enjoy His presence more deeply.

We all want our lives to be fruitful and beautiful, but just like no tree can bear fruit without proper deep roots, no child of God can be fruitful without deep meditation and loving attentiveness to God (Psalm 1). It’s in our silent meditation that we can really enjoy the presence of, and be consumed by, the love of God. In Matthew 4:4 Jesus is basically inviting us to fill-up, to draw our energy from and enjoy, like a hearty meal, every word that God speaks. This can only happen if we become still and listen (Psalm 46:10).

“What topic could possibly deserve more of our attention than listening to God? When the Source of all life and wisdom speaks, those who would be wise, listen. The foolish either don’t care or don’t learn how to listen.”- Dutch Sheets.

Dig in:

Meditate, contemplate and have communion with God. Allow God to take centre stage in your mind and heart. Forget yourself and time, and just get lost in wonder, love and praise.
