A Compassionate “No”

Moses was desperate.

He’d seen God’s power in incredible ways—from a bush enveloped by supernatural flames (Ex. 3:2) to Israel’s miraculous rescue from captivity in Egypt (Ex. 12:42). Moses had witnessed God protect His people as He led them through the Red Sea (Ex. 14:21-22) and provide them food and water (Ex. 16:12, 17:6).

But it wasn’t God’s power, protection, or provision that Moses was frantic for in Exodus 33—it was His presence: “Then Moses said, ‘If You don’t personally go with us, don’t make us leave this place’” (Ex. 33:15, NLT). After God assured him that He would continue traveling with the people of Israel, Moses took his request one bold step further: “… Then show me your glorious presence” (Ex. 33:18b). This time God’s response was more reserved. He said that He would show Moses His presence on one condition: Moses couldn’t look at His face (Ex. 33:20).

Why would God refuse to grant Moses’ entire request? Why would He hide part of His glory from His faithful servant?

Because if He didn’t, Moses would die.

The Lord withheld a portion of what Moses most desired, not because He didn’t care or was displeased with him, but because God knew Moses couldn’t handle it. The weight of His full glory would destroy a mortal man.

Notice that God didn’t chastise Moses. He didn’t say, “Who do you think you are, that you would assume you deserve to see Me?” He didn’t remind Moses of his failures or scoff at the ignorance of his request. Instead, God placed His hand over Moses and shielded him until His overwhelming brilliance was only visible from behind (Ex. 33:22). God’s answer wasn’t a harsh or patronizing rejection; it was a compassionate “no,” accompanied by His gentle, intimate presence.

Like Moses, we may not understand all the ramifications of what we ask God to do. But God does, and He offers us the same gentle presence and compassion—even when His answer has to be “no.”

• Think about a time in the past when God withheld something that you deeply desired. In hindsight, how was His “no” compassionate? 


• Think about something you desire that God is withholding from you right now. How can you see His presence as He tells you “no” or “not yet”?
