Finding Rest

If you read the book of Deuteronomy, you’ll find page after page of commands and rules and instructions from God to the Israelites. Basically, He’s telling them exactly how to live and faithfully follow Him. It’s simple, but it’s a lot.

Yet, at the end of the book, in Deuteronomy 30, God says, “Now what I’m commanding you today is not too difficult for you.” Seems a bit unfair, doesn’t it? How are we supposed to follow all of those rules? Not only does it seem too difficult, it seems impossible!

For many of us, this is what the entrepreneurial journey is like. There’s so much to do, so much to juggle and balance, that it just feels impossible to keep up. And then we’re supposed to “persevere” and “be faithful” and “find rest”? Yeah, right…

But Jesus offers us another way. You want to know why His yoke is easy and His burden is light? It’s because He looked at all the commands God gave His people, all the things that required faithfulness, and He did them. He fulfilled the law that we could never grasp so that we wouldn’t have to. 

God told us that living faithfully isn’t too difficult, not because it’s easy but because it’s simple. The concepts of faithfulness and perseverance aren’t difficult to understand. We can clearly see what is being asked of us. Following through, on the other hand, is a completely different task. But that’s where Jesus comes in.

Where we fall short, there Jesus is. Where we drop a few of the things we’re juggling, there Jesus is to catch them. Where we need to find rest, there Jesus is waiting with open arms to embrace us and remove every burden we’ve placed upon ourselves.

So, think about all the things that are weighing on you today and ask yourself this: am I carrying a burden that Jesus already bore for me?

• Why is it hard for you to find rest from your work? What are the responsibilities that keep you from using your time to form healthy habits that include rest?


• Find time this week to take one hour and pray through this verse. Ask God to show you the burdens you can let go of, and see what He does when you use your time to commune with Him.
