Creatures of Habit: FastingSample

Creatures of Habit: Fasting

DAY 2 OF 7

Fasting: The How of the Habit

As you begin a practice of fasting, you probably have questions. And rightfully so. Fasting feels unique as far as spiritual disciplines go. While there is not much you need to consider about your own biology when you read your Bible, in fasting from food there are lots of things to consider regarding the impact on your body. In fact, there are so many questions about the scientific “how” of fasting, that these details are best left to your own research and conversations with trusted professionals. So, let’s start here…

Fasting is the practice of going without something. That might be food, or it might be something else. But whatever you choose to go without, the heart principle always precedes the physical practice.

In the Sermon on the Mount in Matthew chapter 6, Jesus teaches about fasting. He begins with the phrase, “When you fast” (verse 16). The take-away? Jesus assumes the people are participating in fasts. Jesus goes on to describe how people should fast when they are fasting. So, what is Jesus’ teaching on how to fast?

Jesus says, don’t make it a show.

Apparently, there were people in Jesus’ day who would alter their physical appearances in such a way that it was obvious to everyone that they were fasting. Jesus says that the recognition they received, well…that was their reward. BUT, there is another way to fast.

“But when you fast, put oil on your head and wash your face, so that it will not be obvious to others that you are fasting, but only to your Father” (Matthew 6:17-18).

So how are we to fast? Discreetly, unobtrusively, humbly, in secret. Why? Because God sees. God sees the quiet hidden places of our lives and our hearts. He doesn’t need a show.

What is the reward in this kind of fasting? I’m guessing it has a lot to do with what Jesus said at the beginning of the Sermon on the Mount. Blessed are the meek. Blessed are the pure in heart. Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness. For they will be filled.

  • How do you put on a show for God?

  • What would it feel like to put that mask down?

Start by reading the section in the Sermon on the Mount about fasting (Matthew 6:16-18) and then go back and read the Beatitudes (Matthew 5:1-10).
