For Those Who Are Thirsty Sample

For Those Who Are Thirsty

DAY 1 OF 7

Supernatural Thirst

Creatures are not born with desires unless satisfaction for those desires exists. A baby feels hunger: well, there is such a thing as food. A duckling wants to swim: well, there is such a thing as water. Men feel sexual desire: well, there is such a thing as sex. If I find in myself a desire which no experience in this world can satisfy, the most probable explanation is that I was made for another world.

                                                                                                  —C.S. Lewis, Mere Christianity

King Solomon, who succeeded King David to rule Israel, was famous for his wisdom. Like his father, who wrote many of the psalms, Solomon’s writings are also part of the Bible. He wrote Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, and the Song of Solomon.

Solomon was wealthy. He was educated. He was accomplished, able to govern and make alliances. He supervised the construction of magnificent buildings, including his own palace and the Temple in Jerusalem. He obtained whatever gave him pleasure. He had 700 wives and 300 concubines. He had everything he desired—power, sex, money, knowledge, accomplishments, popularity, and fame. Yet he felt that pursuing all of these things was like chasing the wind. It was meaningless. He was not satisfied. He was still thirsty.

When you have desires in you that you realize are not going to be satisfied through sex, marriage, money, or fame, or anything in this world, this is an indication that you’ve been created for another world. C. S. Lewis came to this conclusion, and so did Solomon. He concluded his meditation on the meaning of life by encouraging people to remember their Creator.

Acknowledge your thirst. Whether you are young, old, or somewhere in between, you’ve probably felt that thirst that is larger than life, that longing for something or someone you can’t name, that desire that shows you still haven’t found what you’re looking for.

Put aside your need for accomplishment. Put aside your need for ownership, security, and attention. Put It all aside. The world can’t satisfy your thirst. You need Jesus. We all need Him. He invited all who are thirsty to come to Him.
