Leviticus 25: A Radical Vision of God’s Justice

DAY 2 OF 7

God’s provision and our trust

For many, it sounds like an incredible dream to talk about a time of debts being forgiven and slaves set free. A time for all who have lost their land to have it restored to them; for people to care for each other, including those not like us, in pursuit of wholeness. A time of new social relations, a new economy, a new reality.

This was God’s plan for the people who left Egypt as slaves in search of freedom and a land to live in and cultivate. A place to experience forgiveness, freedom, and the restoration of human relationships. As part of His plan, God established the jubilee year in order to lead His sons and daughters back to a faithful relationship with Him, with one another, and with creation.

God promised a miracle every sixth year; an abundant harvest that would feed them for the next three years of jubilee, planting and harvesting. God asked His people to trust their lives to this miracle. He promised to provide as He had in the wilderness. This miracle was a foretaste of the bread of life that would come down from heaven.

REFLECTION:

What does the link between a right relationship with God and a right relationship with others and nature tell us about the message of the gospel?
