Single, Ready To Mingle

DAY 7 OF 7

I want you to notice that God did not bring Eve to Adam and say, “This is your wife.” He presented Eve to Adam, fully naked. Adam is the one who said, “WOOOO MAN.” Adam looked at Eve and said something that resembled a pick-up line, “This is the bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh.” Eve started to blush and, Boom! They were married.

Nowhere in Genesis do we see God bringing Adam a wife; instead, he presents him with a woman. Adam chooses her to be his wife. Now, Adam had it easy. First, there were no other options, and second, the woman came in naked! However, thousands of years later, things have changed a bit. But one principle that remains is God presents, and we choose.

An angel came to Joseph to tell him that Mary was to be his wife because Mary was pregnant out of wedlock and claimed that the Holy Spirit made her pregnant. Imagine how ridiculous that might have sounded. That’s why an angel had to intervene to help Joseph believe Mary. There are people who wait for God to give them a supernatural dream, angelic visitation, or prophetic confirmation about the person they should marry. Those things are not wrong, but most people will never get those spiritual signs, and, frankly, they don’t need them.

I struggled with this myself. I wanted a supernatural sign from God to help me decide who to marry. I heard romantic stories of people who had these kinds of spiritual confirmations. I was in ministry. I wanted to have the same story for a few reasons and these reasons were not right.

The first reason was that I wanted to have a cool, supernatural, romantic story to share with others to impress on how spiritual I was. I’m totally being honest here. I liked Lana and I loved her. She was compatible with me. There was a green light in my heart, but I wanted the Guy upstairs to give me a huge thumbs up by giving me an angelic visitation, prophetic confirmation, or at least a dream in the night.

The second reason for wanting a huge sign from God was that I thought if God said from heaven that she was the one, my marriage would be magical, like heaven on earth. In other words, I would not have to change or deal with my issues. I thought, that if I had a sign from God that my marriage would be smooth, perfect, and without any challenges. I quickly learned that a marriage like that is a fairytale. Yes, your marriage can be made in heaven but lighting and thunder are also made in heaven. I learned that no matter who you marry (a person who is in Christ, of course), you are going to have to change, and a good marriage requires work. Loving your wife like Christ loves the church, or submitting to your husband, will not come naturally. The Holy Spirit will be needed to help with that.

The third reason for wanting a huge supernatural sign was that I was indecisive. I was afraid to make the wrong choice and I wanted God to make that choice for me. But at the root of all that fear was immaturity. I knew that this decision would be until death, it was serious. I was hoping that my parents, pastor, or a prophet would make that decision for me. If things didn't work out, I would have someone to blame instead of taking responsibility for my actions. I was born a male, but I had to become a man. Being a male is a matter of birth, being a man is a matter of choice. It’s a part of the process of becoming mature, and assertive, able to shoulder responsibilities and make decisions.

Remember, God presents, we choose!
