For Such A Time As This

DAY 4 OF 10

When Haman received his [undeserved] promotion, “all the king's servants who were at the king's gate bowed down and paid homage to Haman, for the king had so commanded concerning him. But Mordecai did not bow down or pay homage” (Esther 3:2, ESV).

Now, why would a righteous man not bow down when it was expected of him?

At this point in the story, it is especially important to recall Mordecai’s Jewish heritage. To a Jew, bowing down to anyone or anything aside from God was considered to be an act of idolatry. Mordecai refused to bow before Haman because he was truly a righteous man!

The king’s servants hounded Mordecai and his refusal to bow, but Mordecai remained firm in his faith. He was not interested in receiving the approval of man. His priorities lay within the heart of the Father- exactly where our priorities should lie, too. (Exodus 20:3-5)

Mordecai’s perseverance is admirable to us, but it was not admirable in the eyes of the king’s servants. They were more concerned with stirring up trouble than they were respecting Mordecai’s decision to remain faithful to his one, true King.

As Christians, our faith will be tested many times. Like Mordecai, we must keep all of who we are fixed on all of who the Father is--no matter what!

Mordecai’s faith moved mountains. So can ours.

Reflection

  1. What verses in Esther 3:1-5 stood out to you?
  2. Why did Mordecai refuse to bow in honor to Haman? Was it right or wrong of him?
  3. What does it mean to be righteous? (Psalm 33:18-22) Can we attain it on our own? (2 Corinthians 5:21)
