30 Days In The Gospel Of Mark

DAY 8 OF 30

Thought:

After a long, hard day of work, most people want to get home and relax. We definitely do not want to be caught in the middle of a dangerous storm in a little boat! In this passage, we see that we do not need to be afraid in scary situations because Jesus is with us. The disciples could have died from the storm, but Jesus was with them and He calmed the waves. Jesus is Lord even over nature. Nothing is outside of His mighty power. The disciples were right to wonder who this man was, that even the wind and waves obeyed Him. Now we have the answer: He is the Son of God, King over all of creation.

1. How would it feel to be caught in a dangerous storm at sea?

2. Who did the disciples turn to for help?

3. How does Jesus show His care and love to the disciples?

4. What can we learn about the identity of Jesus from this event?

Engage:

Our lives are full of different “storms,” or difficult circumstances that can be scary or frustrating. God never minds when we bring our troubles and requests to Him. He is happy to help us and powerful enough to deliver us from the waves. What “storms” are you experiencing right now? How does God help you with your fears?

Deeper Waters:

As scary as some situations may seem, Jesus has authority over them all. He is always able to say “Quiet! Be still!” Sometimes it can be hard to remember that God is in control when big waves are crashing all around us. Make a list of Christian or worship songs you can listen to in difficult times to remind you that Jesus is with you. Here’s a few to help you get started: “Whom Shall I Fear” (by Chris Tomlin), “Do It Again” (by Elevation Worship), “Great I Am” (by New Life Worship), and “Even If” (by MercyMe).
