The Prayers Of Jesus: A 5-Day Devotional

DAY 3 OF 5

Jesus Prayed with Confidence

What does it mean for Jesus to be the life and light of the world? The final words of John 17, “that the love with which you have loved me may be in them, and I in them,” provide the answer. Jesus saves people from their sins in order that they may love God. Acceptable love toward God and Christ must come from God through Christ by the Spirit. We do not get love as a substance, as if it were the gift itself; we receive Christ himself. He dwells in us, along with the Father and the Spirit, so that we may receive what he requests in this High Priestly Prayer. Without a doubt, all is well for the Christian, based on this sole fact: “I in them.” Christ in us is, as Paul said, the hope of glory (Col. 1:27).

If Christ is in me, I need fear nothing. He will be with me wherever I am. Whether I am in a house of mourning or of feasting, a hospital or sports stadium, ministering to the ungodly or praising God with the saints, he is with me. He has not left his people as orphans: “I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you. Yet a little while and the world will see me no more, but you will see me. Because I live, you also will live. In that day you will know that I am in my Father, and you in me, and I in you” (John 14:18–20).
