God's Word Through African Eyes: A 30-Day Devotional

DAY 10 OF 30

Sin Is Like Jiggers: a devotion on forgiveness

From an Africa Study Bible application note:

Sin affects our lives like a jigger infestation. Sin eats into our spiritual and emotional health just as a jigger burrows into a person’s feet and hands. Once a jigger has entered a person’s body, it multiplies and causes pain. Jigger wounds make walking very painful, so people drop out of school or may lose their livelihoods. Likewise, sin destroys every part of our lives. Shame often prevents people from admitting they have jiggers or that they have sinned, but this only allows the problem to grow worse. Until just recently, the only treatment was to cut the jiggers out of the skin. Sin must be completely removed from our lives so that we can experience wholeness and healing.

Guilt and drifting far away from God brings pain. When sin invades, our only hope for joy, peace, and restoration is God’s unfailing love and mercy.

Today:

Honestly acknowledge a sin in your life to God. Do not try to hide it from everyone. Sincerely repent, using Psalm 51 as a model and look for ways to add accountability to your life. How will you be rid of the “jiggers” for good? Perhaps you need a friend, accountability partner, or small group to help you remain pure and faithful. If so, start looking for this help today.
