God's Great Passion For UnitySample

God's Great Passion For Unity

DAY 4 OF 4

Everything We Do Should Originate In And Multiply Unity

Unity is not optional.

Consider that Paul talks about unity in every single one of his books. Unity was also a key part of early Church growth strategy as Luke places great emphasis on their “togetherness” (Acts 1:14, 2:46–47, 4:24). And of course, Jesus prayed for unity (John 17). The mandate for unity in the Christian community reverberates throughout the entire New Testament!

There must come a moment when we personally come alive to see that unity is mission critical for the expansion of God's Kingdom on earth.

Everything God does begins in unity and multiplies unity. As the embodiment of Christ’s love, you and I should not only want to be like our Lord in all things, but we are called to. Therefore, our work must also originate in unity and multiply unity. This is not a calling exclusively for pastors or ministry leaders either. If unity matters to God, it better be a priority to us!

But working towards unity in our family, at work or in the Church, is very difficult. Where do we even start?

Thankfully, we have great reason for hope. As believers, we have unlimited access to the Holy Spirit, the key that allows us to extend the grace we need for unity to thrive.

We can also look to nature for innovative solutions to disrupt division.

There is a magnificent metaphor for us in creation that will help us overcome our crisis of fragmentation. God has placed His essence into nature (Romans 1:20) and given us a memorable, captivating and powerfully practical visual for unity: a murmuration.

A murmuration is a jaw-dropping phenomena of flocking starlings. This bird formation is unlike any flock of birds, which is why scientists had to give it a special name. New research has uncovered the driving why and how behind this natural marvel, revealing powerful implications. When these birds follow a core set of behaviors, it allows them to reach unimaginable efficiency, speed and finesse within their unified movements. It is a beautiful madness in the sky.

So next time you look at the birds of the air, imagine what the Church could be and remember God’s great passion for unity. Remember His invitation for you to join the greater chorus and be part of a powerful movement that brings His kingdom on earth, just as it is in heaven.
