The Parable of the Lost Coin

“Or suppose a woman has ten silver coins and loses one. Doesn’t she light a lamp, sweep the house and search carefully until she finds it? And when she finds it, she calls her friends and neighbors together and says, ‘Rejoice with me; I have found my lost coin.’ In the same way, I tell you, there is rejoicing in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner who repents.” 

Teach:

Easter is one of the two times each year that many non-churchgoing people will actually go to church (the other one is Christmas). For those who are unsaved or not making wise choices in how they live their lives, they may feel that they have lost God, and wonder how they can find Him again. This parable -- similar to the lost sheep -- reveals the great lengths God will go to search for anyone who has wandered away from Him. 

God doesn’t just care about the lost, though. He also cares about those of us who love Him, and has “hidden” so many good things for us to find and experience to help us learn about His character. Hidden in the Bible are words that show us more of God’s goodness. Jeremiah 29:13 says, “You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all of your heart.” (NIV) What a promise!

How do we search and seek God out? We find Him by searching through His Word, talking to Him, asking other believers about Him, going to church so that we can hear about Him. Even when we have come to know God, there is still much more to discover about Him. We can search for Him forever and still keep learning and discovering more about who He is!

Lenten Reflection: 

Not only does God actively pursue those who are lost, but He has “hidden” things about Himself for those of us who love Him to find and experience more of Him.



Activity: 

Design a Seek & Find page, where you are looking for lost coins.



Prayer: 

God, help me to search for clues about who you are as earnestly as the woman who was searching for her lost coin. Give me the passion to share you to my friends and family who don’t know you yet. As I get ready to celebrate Easter, orient my heart away from myself and on to you.
