DAY 2 OF 5

The Myth of the “Right” Person

Have you ever noticed that girl or guy at your school who checked all the right boxes? They love Jesus; they read their Bible App before school, and they even pray before lunch in the cafeteria! Could it get any better? Then, you find out they serve in the 2-year-old room at your church! 2-year-olds! What a saint they must be.

You think to yourself, “They’re the person I’ve been looking for.”

Here’s the thing: having a great dating experience doesn’t happen simply because you find the right person. A great dating experience happens when both of you commit to becoming the right person.

As Pastor Andy Stanley regularly says, “Become the person the person you’re looking for is looking for.”

How do you become the right person? Here are three ways:

1.) Read your Bible daily.

The good news is that you’re already doing a great job at this by reading this Bible Plan! Don’t stop there. Start a Plan about the Proverbs or read through the Gospels to learn more about who Jesus is. We talked about how you become like who you spend time with, and when you spend time with God by reading His Word, you’ll start becoming more like Him, too.

2.) Be respectful.

Being the right person means treating your boyfriend or girlfriend with respect. If you’re always disrespectful to your friends, parents, teachers, or small group leaders, it’s not going to magically change once you start dating someone.

Jesus taught us the best way to demonstrate respect for others in Matthew 7:12 NLT: “Do to others whatever you would like them to do to you. …”

3.) Pray and ask God for wisdom.

James 1:5 NLT says: If you need wisdom, ask our generous God, and he will give it to you. He will not rebuke you for asking.

Isn’t that so cool? If you ask for wisdom, the Bible promises that God will give it to you. Dating isn’t easy to navigate. But you don’t have to do it alone. If you ask God for wisdom, He’ll give it to you and help you become the right person.
