Trust: A Walk Through the Psalms (Ps. 121-150)

DAY 3 OF 5

There are moments when life feels like too much for us to handle. Our work can be so taxing that we do not know how we can possibly complete it all. A medical diagnosis that has no positive outlook can overwhelm us with fear. The sudden death of a loved one can send us spiraling into the depths of grief. These circumstances can make us throw our hands up and exclaim: “I’ve had enough!” The pilgrims in Psalm 123 uttered similar words in light of the people that surrounded them. But even in their overwhelm, they looked to the Lord, reminding us that we, too, are to look to God in the moments when we feel weighed down by our circumstances. The words of Psalm 123 remind us that God is in control. God is the One who is enthroned in heaven. He is above all things and before all things. He rules and reigns over all of creation. God’s sovereignty (His rule over all things and ability to work through all things) should comfort us. God’s sovereignty reminds us that He is in control of our circumstances and working in our circumstances. We often cannot do anything about the situations of suffering we find ourselves in, but it is a great comfort to know that God is doing something good, even if we cannot see how. When we find ourselves in a situation where we have had enough of the pain, opposition, or overwhelm, we can lift our eyes to the Lord. We can fix our eyes on the One who holds our lives in His hands. As we do, we are reminded that God is gracious and faithful to us in our moments of need. God has already shown us favor by sending His Son on the cross to die for us. And He continues to show us favor by answering our prayers, providing for us, and giving us His presence. So let us remember who God is and what He does for us, allowing such truth to bring peace to our troubled hearts. Reflect and Respond What are some practical ways in which you can look to God in your moments of need? How can you trust in the Lord and wait for Him to act when you find yourself in a troubled situation?
