Making decisions can be one of the hardest things we do. When we have to make a choice, it’s easy to get stuck because of the fear that we might choose the wrong one. This “analysis paralysis” causes us to waste a lot of time and energy and keeps us busy rethinking our options and replaying our decisions. Two factors typically come into play with analysis paralysis. We either (1) let fear tell us we will make the wrong decision and freeze, or (2) we refuse to refine our choices, become overwhelmed by the sheer scope of them, and shut down. As a result, we waste time and energy when making even the most mundane decisions because we lack the confidence to make a decision in a world of options. But what if I told you it doesn’t have to be that way? Because it doesn’t. I’ll show you how. Like it or not, every single decision we make takes us down the road closer to the destination that is our future. What we think, believe, hope for, study, or dream about doesn’t affect the outcome of our future. The decisions we make and the actions we take do. With that much depending on our decision-making ability, it’s no wonder we become paralyzed. In any decision in life, it’s important to pray and look for answers in scripture. James 1:5 tells us, “If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you.” We have to trust that the God of the universe is working out something great in our lives. Knowing that, we have to continue to seek His wisdom and then stay the course. It’s easy to overthink every decision we make. Every day we face an avalanche of decisions, from the minor to the major. In those moments, I remind myself of the truth found in Philippians 4:6-7: “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” It’s like the words of an old familiar hymn: “My hope is built on nothing less Than Jesus’ blood and righteousness I dare not trust the sweetest frame, But wholly lean on Jesus’ name.” Good decision making requires me to remember and lean on the One in whom I have placed my confidence in the first place. Even when I don’t feel confident in the decision I’m making, I am confident in the One who goes before me, behind me, and with me. Prayer: Lord, sometimes I feel overwhelmed by the decisions that need to be made. Reassure me that you will lead and guide my every step. Show me what to do when I need it most and fill my mind with your peace so I can move confidently forward. Amen.
