Death Plot and the Anointing in Bethany
1It was now two days before the Passover and [the festival of] Unleavened Bread, and the chief priests and the scribes were searching for a deceitful way to arrest Jesus and kill Him; [Matt 26:2-5; Luke 22:1, 2] 2but they were saying, “Not during the festival, for the people might riot.”
3While He was in Bethany [as a guest] at the home of #14:3 See note Matt 26:6.Simon the leper, and reclining at the table, a #14:3 John the Apostle identifies this woman as Mary, sister of Martha and Lazarus (Matt 26:7; John 12:3). Jesus was anointed in a similar way by an unnamed woman when he was in Galilee dining at the home of a Pharisee (Luke 7:36-39).woman came with an alabaster vial of very costly and precious perfume of pure #14:3 See note Matt 26:7.nard; and she broke the vial and poured the perfume over His head. 4But there were #14:4 Judas may have been the instigator of this complaint (John 12:4-6).some who were indignantly remarking to one another, “Why has this perfume been wasted? 5For this perfume might have been sold for more than three hundred denarii [a laborer’s wages for almost a year], and the money given to the poor.” And they scolded her. 6But Jesus said, “Let her alone; why are you bothering her and causing trouble? She has done a good and beautiful thing to Me. 7For you always have the poor with you, and whenever you wish you can do something good to them; but you will not always have Me. [Deut 15:11] 8She has done what she could; she has anointed My body beforehand for the burial. 9I assure you and most solemnly say to you, wherever the good news [regarding salvation] is proclaimed throughout the world, what she has done will be told in memory of her.”
10Then Judas Iscariot, who was one of the twelve [disciples], went to the chief priests to betray Jesus to them. [Matt 26:14-16; Luke 22:3-6; John 6:71] 11When they heard this they were delighted, and promised to give him money. And he began looking for an opportune time to betray Jesus.
The Last Passover
12On the first day [of the festival] of #14:12 This remembrance lasted eight days. The Passover lambs were selected on the 10th of Nisan (March/April) and sacrificed on the 14th of Nisan (the first day of the feast). The Passover meal was eaten that same night (the 15th of Nisan). Passover was immediately followed by the Feast of Unleavened Bread (15-21 Nisan). The terms “Passover” and “The Feast of Unleavened Bread” were used interchangeably.Unleavened Bread, when [as was customary] they sacrificed the Passover lamb, His disciples asked Him, “Where do You want us to go and prepare for You to eat the Passover?” [Matt 26:17-19; Luke 22:7-13] 13And He sent two of His disciples, saying to them, “Go into the city, and a #14:13 Water jars were usually carried by women, so it would have been easy to notice a manservant performing this task.man carrying a jar of water will meet you; follow him; 14and say to the #14:14 Tradition identifies the owner of the house as Mark’s father.owner of the house he enters, ‘The Teacher asks, “Where is My guest room in which I may eat the Passover with My disciples?” ’ 15He will show you a large upstairs room, furnished and ready [with carpets and dining couches]; prepare [the supper] for us there.” 16The disciples left and went to the city and found everything just as He had told them, and they prepared the Passover.
17When it was evening, He came with the twelve [disciples]. [Matt 26:20-25] 18While they were reclining at the table, Jesus said, “I assure you and most solemnly say to you that one of you will betray Me—one who is eating with Me.” [Ps 41:9] 19They began to be grieved and deeply distressed and to say to Him one by one, “Surely not I?” 20And He replied, “It is one of the twelve [disciples], one who is dipping bread in the bowl with Me. 21For the Son of Man goes [to the cross] just as it is written [in Scripture] of Him; but woe to that man by whom the Son of Man is betrayed! It would have been good for that man if he had not been born.”
The Lord’s Supper
22While they were eating, Jesus took bread and #14:22 See note Matt 26:26.blessed it [giving thanks and praise], and He broke it, and gave it to them and said, “Take it. This is My body.” [Matt 26:26-29; Luke 22:17-20; 1 Cor 11:23-25] 23And when He had taken a cup [of wine] and #14:23 See note Matt 26:27.given thanks, He gave it to them, and they all drank from it. [Ex 24:8] 24And He said to them, “This is My blood of the [new] covenant, [My blood] which is being poured out for many [for the forgiveness of sins]. 25I assure you and most solemnly say to you, I will not drink again of the fruit of the vine until that day when I drink it new in the kingdom of God.”
26After they had sung a #14:26 The Hallel psalms (113-118) were sung at Passover.hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives.
27Jesus said to them, “You will all fall away [and be ashamed and be afraid to be associated with Me as disciples], because it is written, ‘I will strike the Shepherd, and the sheep will be scattered.’ [Zech 13:7] 28But after I have been raised [from the dead], I will go ahead of you to Galilee.” 29But Peter said to Him, “Even if they all fall away [and desert You, ashamed and afraid of being associated with You], yet I will not [do so]!” 30Jesus said to him, “I assure you and most solemnly say to you, this very night, before a rooster crows twice, you will deny [that you even know] Me three times.” [Matt 26:34; John 13:38] 31But Peter kept saying insistently, “If I have to die with You, I will not deny You!” And they all were saying the same thing as well.
Jesus in Gethsemane
32Then they went to a place called Gethsemane; and Jesus said to His disciples, “Sit down here until I have prayed.” [Matt 26:36-46; Luke 22:40-46] 33He took Peter and James and John with Him, and He began to be deeply distressed and troubled [extremely anguished at the prospect of what was to come]. 34And He said to them, “My soul is deeply grieved and overwhelmed with sorrow, to the point of death; remain here and keep watch.” 35After going a little farther, He fell to the ground [distressed by the weight of His spiritual burden] and began to pray that if it were possible [in the Father’s will], the hour [of suffering and death for the sins of mankind] might pass from Him. 36He was saying, “#14:36 An Aramaic word used by young children when addressing their fathers, but not used by Jews in prayer because of the word’s implied familiarity. Jesus’ use of the word emphasized his Father-Son relationship with God.Abba, Father! All things are possible for You; take this cup [of judgment] away from Me; but not what I will, but what You will.” 37And He came back and found them sleeping, and He said to Peter, “Simon, are you asleep? Were you unable to keep watch for one hour? 38Keep [actively] watching and praying so that you do not come into temptation; the spirit is willing, but the #14:38 Lit flesh.body is weak.” 39He went away again and prayed, saying the same words. 40And again He came back and found them sleeping, because their eyes were very heavy; and they did not know how to answer Him. 41He came back a third time and said to them, “Are you still sleeping and resting? Enough [of that]! The hour has come. Look, the Son of Man is being betrayed into the hands of sinners. 42Get up, let us go. Look, my betrayer is near!”
Betrayal and Arrest
43And at once, while He was still speaking, Judas [Iscariot], one of the twelve [disciples], came up, and with him a crowd of men with swords and clubs, who came from the chief priests, the scribes, and the elders [of the Sanhedrin]. [Matt 26:47-56; Luke 22:47-53; John 18:3-11] 44Now the betrayer had given them a signal, saying, “Whomever I kiss, He is the one; seize Him and lead Him away safely [under guard].” 45When Judas came, immediately he went up to Jesus and said, “Rabbi (Master)!” and he #14:45 A kiss on either the hand or cheek was a common gesture of greeting and reverence given to a Rabbi by his disciples. The purpose of Judas’ exaggerated kiss would be to help the soldiers identify Jesus.kissed Him [forcefully]. 46They laid hands on Him and seized Him. 47But one of the bystanders [Simon Peter] drew his sword and struck [Malchus] the slave of the high priest and cut off his ear. [Matt 26:51; Luke 22:50; John 18:10] 48Jesus said to them, “Have you come out with swords and clubs to arrest Me, as you would against a robber? 49Day after day I was with you, teaching in the [courts and porches of the] temple, and you did not seize Me; but this has happened so that the Scriptures would be fulfilled.” 50Then all of His disciples abandoned Him and fled.
51A young #14:51 Perhaps this was Mark, the writer of this gospel. If the Passover meal had been held in the house of Mark’s father, Judas and the crowd may have looked for Jesus there before going to Gethsemane. Mark, being awakened by the crowd, could have followed them to the garden wearing only what he slept in.man was following Him, wearing [only] a linen sheet over his naked body; and some men seized him. 52But pulling free of the linen sheet, he escaped [from them] naked.
Jesus before His Accusers
53They led Jesus away to the high priest, and all the chief priests and the elders and the scribes (Sanhedrin, Jewish High Court) gathered together. [Matt 26:57-68; Luke 22:66-71; John 18:12f, 19-24] 54Peter had followed Him at a distance, right into the courtyard of the high priest; and he was sitting with the officers [guards and servants] and warming himself at the fire. 55Now the chief priests and the entire Council (Sanhedrin, Jewish High Court) were trying to obtain testimony against Jesus [which they could use] to have Him [condemned and] executed, but they were not finding any. 56For many [people] were giving false testimony against Him, but their testimonies were not consistent. 57Some stood up and began to give false testimony against Him, saying, 58“We heard Him say, ‘I will destroy this temple (sanctuary) that was made with hands, and in three days I will build another made without hands.’ ” [John 2:19-21] 59Not even in this respect was their testimony consistent. 60The high priest stood up and came forward and asked Jesus, “Have You no answer to give [in response] to what these men are testifying against You?” 61But Jesus kept silent and gave no answer at all. Again the high priest was questioning Him, and saying to Him, “Are You the Christ (the Messiah, the Anointed), the Son of the #14:61 In the Talmud, God is frequently referred to as “the Holy One, Blessed be He.”Blessed One?” 62Jesus said, “I am; and you will [all] see the Son of Man seated [with authority] at the right hand of Power (the Father), and coming with the clouds of heaven.” [Ps 110:1; Dan 7:13] 63Then #14:63 This was a response required by Jewish law for judges who had heard blasphemy. However, OT law forbade the high priest to tear his clothing (Lev 10:6; 21:10).tearing his robe [to express his indignation], the high priest said, “What further need do we have of witnesses? [Num 14:6] 64You have heard the blasphemy [that is, His claim to be the Son of God]. What is your decision?” And they all condemned Him to be [guilty and] deserving of death. [Lev 24:16] 65And some began to spit on Him, and to blindfold Him, and to beat Him with their fists, and to say to Him, “Prophesy [by telling us who hit you]!” Then the officers took custody of Him and struck him in the face.
Peter’s Denials
66While Peter was down below in the courtyard, one of the servant-girls of the high priest came, [Matt 26:69-75; Luke 22:55-62; John 18:16-18, 25-27] 67and when she saw Peter warming himself, she looked intently at him and said, “You were with Jesus the Nazarene, too.” 68But he denied it, saying, “I neither know nor understand what you are talking about.” Then he went out [of the courtyard] to the porch, #14:68 Later mss add this clause.[and a rooster crowed.] 69The servant-girl saw him, and began once more to tell the bystanders, “This [man] is one of them.” 70But again he denied it. After a little while, the bystanders again said to Peter, “You are in fact one of them, for [it is clear from your accent, that] you are a Galilean, too.” 71But he began to #14:71 In Judaism such a curse took the form of “May I always be afflicted if I am not being truthful,” or “May I bury my son if…,” or “May I never see the comfort of Zion and Jerusalem if…,” etc. (as found in the Talmud).invoke a curse [on himself] and to swear [an oath], “I do not know this man you are talking about!” 72Immediately a rooster crowed the second time. And Peter remembered what Jesus said to him: “Before a rooster crows twice, you will deny Me three times.” And thinking of this, he began weeping [in anguish].

A Plot To Kill Jesus
(Matthew 26.1-5; Luke 22.1,2; John 11.45-53)
1 #
Ex 12.1-27. It was now two days before Passover and the Festival of Thin Bread. The chief priests and the teachers of the Law of Moses were planning how they could sneak around and have Jesus arrested and put to death. 2They were saying, “We must not do it during the festival, because the people will riot.”
At Bethany
(Matthew 26.6-13; John 12.1-8)
3 #
Lk 7.37,38. Jesus was eating in Bethany at the home of Simon, who once had leprosy,#14.3 leprosy: In biblical times the word “leprosy” was used for many different skin diseases. when a woman came in with a very expensive bottle of sweet-smelling perfume.#14.3 sweet-smelling perfume: The Greek text has “perfume made of pure spikenard,” a plant used to make perfume. After breaking it open, she poured the perfume on Jesus' head. 4This made some of the guests angry, and they complained, “Why such a waste? 5We could have sold this perfume for more than 300 silver coins and given the money to the poor!” So they started saying cruel things to the woman.
6But Jesus said:
Leave her alone! Why are you bothering her? She has done a beautiful thing for me. 7#Dt 15.11. You will always have the poor with you. And whenever you want to, you can give to them. But you won't always have me here with you. 8She has done all she could by pouring perfume on my body to prepare it for burial. 9You may be sure that wherever the good news is told all over the world, people will remember what she has done. And they will tell others.
Judas and the Chief Priests
(Matthew 26.14-16; Luke 22.3-6)
10Judas Iscariot#14.10 Iscariot: See the note at 3.19. was one of the twelve disciples. He went to the chief priests and offered to help them arrest Jesus. 11They were glad to hear this, and they promised to pay him. So Judas started looking for a good chance to betray Jesus.
Jesus Eats with His Disciples
(Matthew 26.17-25; Luke 22.7-14,21-23; John 13.21-30)
12It was the first day of the Festival of Thin Bread, and the Passover lambs were being killed. Jesus' disciples asked him, “Where do you want us to prepare the Passover meal?”
13Jesus said to two of the disciples, “Go into the city, where you will meet a man carrying a jar of water.#14.13 a man carrying a jar of water: A male slave carrying water could mean that the family was rich. Follow him, 14and when he goes into a house, say to the owner, ‘Our teacher wants to know if you have a room where he can eat the Passover meal with his disciples.’ 15The owner will take you upstairs and show you a large room furnished and ready for you to use. Prepare the meal there.”
16The two disciples went into the city and found everything just as Jesus had told them. So they prepared the Passover meal.
17-18 #
Ps 41.9. While Jesus and the twelve disciples were eating together that evening, he said, “The one who will betray me is now eating with me.”
19This made the disciples sad, and one after another they said to Jesus, “You surely don't mean me!”
20He answered, “It is one of you twelve men who is eating from this dish with me. 21The Son of Man will die, just as the Scriptures say. But it is going to be terrible for the one who betrays me. That man would be better off if he had never been born.”
The Lord's Supper
(Matthew 26.26-30; Luke 22.14-23; 1 Corinthians 11.23-25)
22During the meal Jesus took some bread in his hands. He blessed the bread and broke it. Then he gave it to his disciples and said, “Take this. It is my body.”
23Jesus picked up a cup of wine and gave thanks to God. He gave it to his disciples, and they all drank some. 24#Ex 24.8; Jr 31.31-34. Then he said, “This is my blood, which is poured out for many people, and with it God makes his agreement. 25From now on I will not drink any wine, until I drink new wine in God's kingdom.” 26Then they sang a hymn and went out to the Mount of Olives.
Peter's Promise
(Matthew 26.31-35; Luke 22.31-34; John 13.36-38)
27 #
Zec 13.7. Jesus said to his disciples, “All of you will reject me, as the Scriptures say,
‘I will strike down
the shepherd,
and the sheep
will be scattered.’
28 #
Mt 28.16. But after I am raised to life, I will go ahead of you to Galilee.”
29Peter spoke up, “Even if all the others reject you, I never will!”
30Jesus replied, “This very night before a rooster crows twice, you will say three times that you don't know me.”
31But Peter was so sure of himself that he said, “Even if I have to die with you, I will never say I don't know you!”
All the others said the same thing.
Jesus Prays
(Matthew 26.36-46; Luke 22.39-46)
32Jesus went with his disciples to a place called Gethsemane, and he told them, “Sit here while I pray.”
33Jesus took along Peter, James, and John. He was sad and troubled and 34told them, “I am so sad that I feel as if I am dying. Stay here and keep awake with me.”
35-36Jesus walked on a little way. Then he knelt down on the ground and prayed, “Father,#14.35,36 Father: The Greek text has “Abba,” which is an Aramaic word meaning “father.” if it is possible, don't let this happen to me! Father, you can do anything. Don't make me suffer by drinking from this cup.#14.35,36 by drinking from this cup: See the note at 10.38. But do what you want, and not what I want.”
37When Jesus came back and found the disciples sleeping, he said to Simon Peter, “Are you asleep? Can't you stay awake for just one hour? 38Stay awake and pray that you won't be tested. You want to do what is right, but you are weak.”
39Jesus went back and prayed the same prayer. 40But when he returned to the disciples, he found them sleeping again. They simply could not keep their eyes open, and they did not know what to say.
41When Jesus returned to the disciples the third time, he said, “Are you still sleeping and resting?#14.41 Are you still sleeping and resting: Or “You may as well keep on sleeping and resting.” Enough of this! The time has come for the Son of Man to be handed over to sinners. 42Get up! Let's go. The one who will betray me is already here.”
Jesus Is Arrested
(Matthew 26.47-56; Luke 22.47-53; John 18.3-12)
43Jesus was still speaking, when Judas the betrayer came up. He was one of the twelve disciples, and a mob of men armed with swords and clubs were with him. They had been sent by the chief priests, the nation's leaders, and the teachers of the Law of Moses. 44Judas had told them ahead of time, “Arrest the man I greet with a kiss.#14.44 greet with a kiss: It was the custom for people to greet each other with a kiss on the cheek. Tie him up tight and lead him away.”
45Judas walked right up to Jesus and said, “Teacher!” Then Judas kissed him, 46and the men grabbed Jesus and arrested him.
47Someone standing there pulled out a sword. He struck the servant of the high priest and cut off his ear.
48Jesus said to the mob, “Why do you come with swords and clubs to arrest me like a criminal? 49#Lk 19.47; 21.37. Day after day I was with you and taught in the temple, and you didn't arrest me. But what the Scriptures say must come true.”
50All of Jesus' disciples ran off and left him. 51One of them was a young man who was wearing only a linen cloth. And when the men grabbed him, 52he left the cloth behind and ran away naked.
Jesus Is Questioned by the Council
(Matthew 26.57-68; Luke 22.54,55,63-71; John 18.13,14,19-24)
53Jesus was led off to the high priest. Then the chief priests, the nation's leaders, and the teachers of the Law of Moses all met together. 54Peter had followed at a distance, and when he reached the courtyard of the high priest's house, he sat down with the guards to warm himself beside a fire.
55The chief priests and the whole council tried to find someone to accuse Jesus of a crime, so they could put him to death. But they could not find anyone to accuse him. 56Many people did tell lies against Jesus, but they did not agree on what they said. 57Finally, some men stood up and lied about him. They said, 58#Jn 2.19. “We heard him say he would tear down this temple that we built. He also claimed that in three days he would build another one without any help.” 59But even then they did not agree on what they said.
60The high priest stood up in the council and asked Jesus, “Why don't you say something in your own defense? Don't you hear the charges they are making against you?” 61But Jesus kept quiet and did not say a word. The high priest asked him another question, “Are you the Messiah, the Son of the glorious God?”#14.61 Son of the glorious God: “Son of God” was one of the titles used for the kings of Israel.

of God All-Powerful,
and coming with the clouds
of heaven.”
63At once the high priest ripped his robe apart and shouted, “Why do we need more witnesses? 64#Lv 24.15,16. You heard him claim to be God! What is your decision?” They all agreed he should be put to death.
65Some of the people started spitting on Jesus. They blindfolded him, hit him with their fists, and said, “Tell us who hit you!” Then the guards took charge of Jesus and beat him.
Peter Says He Doesn't Know Jesus
(Matthew 26.69-75; Luke 22.56-62; John 18.15-18,25-27)
66While Peter was still in the courtyard, a servant girl of the high priest came up 67and saw Peter warming himself by the fire. She stared at him and said, “You were with Jesus from Nazareth!”
68Peter replied, “That isn't true! I don't know what you're talking about. I don't have any idea what you mean.” He went out to the gate, and a rooster crowed.#14.68 a rooster crowed: These words are not in some manuscripts.
69The servant girl saw Peter again and said to the people standing there, “This man is one of them!”
70“No, I'm not!” Peter replied.
A little while later some of the people said to Peter, “You certainly are one of them. You're a Galilean!”
71This time Peter began to curse and swear, “I don't even know the man you're talking about!”
72At once the rooster crowed a second time. Then Peter remembered that Jesus had told him, “Before a rooster crows twice, you will say three times that you don't know me.” So Peter started crying.
