Things to Come
1As He was coming out of the temple [grounds], one of His disciples said to Him, “Teacher, look what #13:1 The massive size and polished surfaces of the fitted stones that formed the temple structure created a magnificent sight (cf Luke 21:5). The refurbishing of the temple was begun by Herod the Great in 20 b.c. and was completed in a.d. 64 by Herod Agrippa II. The rabbis had a saying: “Whoever has not seen the temple of Herod has never seen a beautiful building” (as quoted from the Talmud). They also said that Herod built it of yellow, white, and perhaps blue marble; and that he intended to cover it with gold, but the rabbis advised him not to because it was beautiful just as it was, looking like the waves of the sea.wonderful stones and what wonderful buildings!” [Matt 24; Luke 21:5-36] 2Jesus replied to him, “You see these great buildings? Not one stone will be left on another which will not be #13:2 In a.d. 70, just six years after the temple complex was completed, it was destroyed by the Roman general Titus and his army, who thoroughly devastated Jerusalem.torn down!”
3As He was sitting on the Mount of Olives opposite the temple, Peter and James and John and Andrew asked Him privately, 4“Tell us, when will these things happen, and what will be the sign when all these things are about to be fulfilled?” 5Jesus began to say to them, “Be careful and see to it that no one misleads you. 6Many will come in My name [misusing My name or claiming to be the Messiah], saying, ‘I am He!’ and will deceive and mislead many. 7When you hear of wars and rumors of wars, do not be alarmed (frightened, troubled); these things must take place, but the end is not yet. 8For nation will rise up against nation, and kingdom against kingdom; there will be earthquakes in various places; there will be famines. These things are the beginning of the #13:8 The Jews used this phrase to describe the unprecedented trouble that would occur prior to Messiah’s advent (as recorded in the Talmud).birth pangs [the intolerable anguish and suffering].
9 “But be on your guard; they will turn you over to courts, and you will be beaten in synagogues, and you will stand [as accused] before governors and kings for My sake, as a testimony to them. 10The gospel [that is, the good news regarding the way of salvation] must first be preached to all the [Gentile] nations. [Col 1:6, 23] 11When they take you and turn you over [to the court], do not worry beforehand about what to say, but say whatever is given to you [by God] in that hour; for it is not you who speak, but it is the Holy Spirit [who will speak through you]. 12Brother will betray brother to [be put to] death, and a father [will hand over] his child; and children will rise up and take a stand against parents and have them put to death. 13You will be hated by everyone because of [your association with] My name, but the one who [patiently perseveres empowered by the Holy Spirit and] endures to the end, he will be saved.
14 “But when you see the # 13:14 I.e. the detestable one who desecrates the temple. See note Matt 24:15. abomination of desolation standing [in the temple sanctuary] where it ought not to be (let the #13:14 I.e. the reader of the book of Daniel (cf Matt 24:15). Jesus is indicating that the final fulfillment of this prophecy is yet to come.reader understand) then those who are in Judea must flee to the mountains. [Dan 9:27; 11:31; 12:11] 15Whoever is on the housetop must not go down [to enter the house], or go inside to take anything out of his house; 16whoever is in the field must not turn back to get his coat. 17And woe to those women who are pregnant and to those who are nursing babies in those days! 18Pray that it will not occur in winter, 19for at that time there will be such tribulation as has not occurred, from the beginning of the creation which God made, until now—and never will [be again]. 20And if the Lord had not shortened the days, no human life would have been saved; but for the sake of the elect, whom He chose [for Himself], He shortened the days. [Dan 12:1] 21Then if anyone says to you, ‘Look, here is the Christ (the Messiah, the Anointed)!’ or, ‘Look, He is there!’ do not believe it; 22for false Christs and false prophets will arise, and they will provide signs and wonders in order to deceive, if [such a thing were] possible, even the elect [those God has chosen for Himself]. 23But be on your guard; I have told you everything in advance.
The Return of Christ
24 “But in those days, after [the suffering and distress of] that tribulation, the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light, [Is 13:10] 25and the stars will be falling from the sky, and the powers that are in the heavens will be shaken. [Is 34:4] 26Then they will see the Son of Man coming in clouds with great power and glory [in royal majesty and splendor]. [Dan 7:13, 14] 27And then He will send out the angels, and will gather together His elect [those He has chosen for Himself] from the four winds, from the farthest end of the earth to the farthest end of heaven.
28 “Now learn this lesson from the fig tree: as soon as its branch becomes tender and it puts out its leaves, you recognize that summer is near. [Matt 24:32, 33; Luke 21:29-31] 29Even so, you too, when you see these things happening, know [for certain] that He is near, right at the door. 30I assure you and most solemnly say to you, this generation [the people living when these signs and events begin] will not pass away until all these things take place. 31Heaven and earth [as now known] will #13:31 See Rev 21:1, “…the first heaven and the first earth passed away….”pass away, but My words will not pass away. 32But of that [exact] day or hour no one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son [in His humanity], but the Father alone.
33 “Be on guard and stay constantly alert # 13:33 One early ms adds “and pray.” [and pray]; for you do not know when the appointed time will come. 34It is like a man away on a journey, who when he left home put his servants in charge, each with his particular task, and also ordered the doorkeeper to be continually alert. 35Therefore, be continually on the alert—for you do not know when the master of the house is coming, whether in the evening, or at midnight, or when the rooster crows, or in the morning— 36[stay alert,] in case he should come suddenly and unexpectedly and find you asleep and unprepared. 37What I say to you I say to everyone, ‘Be on the alert [stay awake and be continually cautious]!’ ”

Mark 13

The Temple Will Be Destroyed
(Matthew 24.1,2; Luke 21.5,6)
1As Jesus was leaving the temple, one of his disciples said to him, “Teacher, look at these beautiful stones and wonderful buildings!”
2Jesus replied, “Do you see these huge buildings? They will certainly be torn down! Not one stone will be left in place.”
Warning about Trouble
(Matthew 24.3-14; Luke 21.7-19)
3Later, as Jesus was sitting on the Mount of Olives across from the temple, Peter, James, John, and Andrew came to him in private. 4#2 Esd 4.51—5.19. They asked, “When will these things happen? What will be the sign that they are about to take place?”
5Jesus answered:
Watch out and don't let anyone fool you! 6Many will come and claim to be me. They will use my name and fool many people.
7When you hear about wars and threats of wars, don't be afraid. These things will have to happen first, but that isn't the end. 8Nations and kingdoms will go to war against each other. There will be earthquakes in many places, and people will starve to death. But this is just the beginning of troubles.
9 #
Mt 10.17-20; Lk 12.11,12. Be on your guard! You will be taken to courts and beaten with whips in their synagogues. And because of me, you will have to stand before rulers and kings to tell about your faith. 10But before the end comes, the good news must be preached to all nations.
11When you are arrested, don't worry about what you will say. You will be given the right words when the time comes. But you will not really be the ones speaking. Your words will come from the Holy Spirit.
12Brothers and sisters will betray each other and have each other put to death. Parents will betray their own children, and children will turn against their parents and have them killed. 13#Mt 10.22. Everyone will hate you because of me. But if you keep on being faithful right to the end, you will be saved.
The Horrible Thing
(Matthew 24.15-21; Luke 21.20-24)
14 #
Dn 9.27; 11.31; 12.11; 1 Macc 1.54; 6.7. Someday you will see that “Horrible Thing” where it should not be.#13.14 where it should not be: Probably the holy place in the temple. Everyone who reads this must try to understand! If you are living in Judea at that time, run to the mountains. 15#Lk 17.31. If you are on the roof#13.15 roof: See the note at 2.4. of your house, don't go inside to get anything. 16If you are out in the field, don't go back for your coat. 17It will be an awful time for women who are expecting babies or nursing young children. 18Pray that it won't happen in winter.#13.18 in winter: In Palestine the winters are cold and rainy and make travel difficult. 19#Dn 12.1; Rev 7.14. This will be the worst time of suffering since God created the world, and nothing this terrible will ever happen again. 20If the Lord doesn't make the time shorter, no one will be left alive. But because of his chosen and special ones, he will make the time shorter.
21If someone should say, “Here is the Messiah!” or “There he is!” don't believe it. 22False messiahs and false prophets will come and work miracles and signs. They will even try to fool God's chosen ones. 23But be on your guard! That's why I am telling you these things now.
When the Son of Man Appears
(Matthew 24.29-31; Luke 21.25-28)
24 #
Is 13.10; Jl 2.10,31; 3.15; Rev 6.12;
Is 13.10; Ez 32.7. In those days, right after this time of suffering,
“The sun will become dark,
and the moon
will no longer shine.
25 #
Is 34.4; Rev 6.13;
Jl 2.10. The stars will fall,
and the powers in the sky#13.25 the powers in the sky: In ancient times people thought that the stars were spiritual powers.
will be shaken.”
26 #
Dn 7.13; Rev 1.7. Then the Son of Man will be seen coming in the clouds with great power and glory. 27He will send his angels to gather his chosen ones from all over the earth.
A Lesson from a Fig Tree
(Matthew 24.32-35; Luke 21.29-33)
28Learn a lesson from a fig tree. When its branches sprout and start putting out leaves, you know summer is near. 29So when you see all these things happening, you will know that the time has almost come.#13.29 the time has almost come: Or “he (that is, the Son of Man) will soon be here.” 30You can be sure that some of the people of this generation will still be alive when all this happens. 31The sky and the earth will not last forever, but my words will.
No One Knows the Day or Time
(Matthew 24.36-44)
32 #
Mt 24.36. No one knows the day or the time. The angels in heaven don't know, and the Son himself doesn't know. Only the Father knows. 33So watch out and be ready! You don't know when the time will come. 34#Lk 12.36-38. It is like what happens when a man goes away for a while and places his servants in charge of everything. He tells each of them what to do, and he orders the guard to keep alert. 35So be alert! You don't know when the master of the house will come back. It could be in the evening or at midnight or before dawn or in the morning. 36But if he comes suddenly, don't let him find you asleep. 37I tell everyone just what I have told you. Be alert!
