 <div class="label">1</div><div class="s1">The Beginning</div><div class="pi"> 1In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. 2Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters.</div><div class="b"></div><div class="li1"> 3And God said, &#8220;Let there be light,&#8221; and there was light. 4God saw that the light was good, and he separated the light from the darkness. 5God called the light &#8220;day,&#8221; and the darkness he called &#8220;night.&#8221; And there was evening, and there was morning&#8212;the first day.</div><div class="li1"> 6And God said, &#8220;Let there be a vault between the waters to separate water from water.&#8221; 7So God made the vault and separated the water under the vault from the water above it. And it was so. 8God called the vault &#8220;sky.&#8221; And there was evening, and there was morning&#8212;the second day.</div><div class="li1"> 9And God said, &#8220;Let the water under the sky be gathered to one place, and let dry ground appear.&#8221; And it was so. 10God called the dry ground &#8220;land,&#8221; and the gathered waters he called &#8220;seas.&#8221; And God saw that it was good.</div><div class="pi"> 11Then God said, &#8220;Let the land produce vegetation: seed-bearing plants and trees on the land that bear fruit with seed in it, according to their various kinds.&#8221; And it was so. 12The land produced vegetation: plants bearing seed according to their kinds and trees bearing fruit with seed in it according to their kinds. And God saw that it was good. 13And there was evening, and there was morning&#8212;the third day.</div><div class="li1"> 14And God said, &#8220;Let there be lights in the vault of the sky to separate the day from the night, and let them serve as signs to mark sacred times, and days and years, 15and let them be lights in the vault of the sky to give light on the earth.&#8221; And it was so. 16God made two great lights&#8212;the greater light to govern the day and the lesser light to govern the night. He also made the stars. 17God set them in the vault of the sky to give light on the earth, 18to govern the day and the night, and to separate light from darkness. And God saw that it was good. 19And there was evening, and there was morning&#8212;the fourth day.</div><div class="li1"> 20And God said, &#8220;Let the water teem with living creatures, and let birds fly above the earth across the vault of the sky.&#8221; 21So God created the great creatures of the sea and every living thing with which the water teems and that moves about in it, according to their kinds, and every winged bird according to its kind. And God saw that it was good. 22God blessed them and said, &#8220;Be fruitful and increase in number and fill the water in the seas, and let the birds increase on the earth.&#8221; 23And there was evening, and there was morning&#8212;the fifth day.</div><div class="li1"> 24And God said, &#8220;Let the land produce living creatures according to their kinds: the livestock, the creatures that move along the ground, and the wild animals, each according to its kind.&#8221; And it was so. 25God made the wild animals according to their kinds, the livestock according to their kinds, and all the creatures that move along the ground according to their kinds. Rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky and over every living creature that moves on the ground.&#8221;</div><div class="pi"> 29Then God said, &#8220;I give you every seed-bearing plant on the face of the whole earth and every tree that has fruit with seed in it. They will be yours for food. 30And to all the beasts of the earth and all the birds in the sky and all the creatures that move along the ground&#8212;everything that has the breath of life in it&#8212;I give every green plant for food.&#8221; And it was so.</div><div class="pi"> 31God saw all that he had made, and it was very good.  <div class="p">47While he was still speaking, Judas, one of the Twelve, arrived. With him was a large crowd armed with swords and clubs, sent from the chief priests and the elders of the people. 48Now the betrayer had arranged a signal with them: &#8220;The one I kiss is the man; arrest him.&#8221; 49Going at once to Jesus, Judas said, &#8220;Greetings, Rabbi!&#8221; and kissed him.</div><div class="p"> 50Jesus replied, &#8220;Do what you came for, friend.&#8221;#26:50 Or &#8220;Why have you come, friend?&#8221;</div><div class="p">Then the men stepped forward, seized Jesus and arrested him. 51With that, one of Jesus&#8217; companions reached for his sword, drew it out and struck the servant of the high priest, cutting off his ear.</div><div class="p"> 52 &#8220;Put your sword back in its place,&#8221; Jesus said to him, &#8220;for all who draw the sword will die by the sword. 53Do you think I cannot call on my Father, and he will at once put at my disposal more than twelve legions of angels? 54But how then would the Scriptures be fulfilled that say it must happen in this way?&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 55In that hour Jesus said to the crowd, &#8220;Am I leading a rebellion, that you have come out with swords and clubs to capture me? Every day I sat in the temple courts teaching, and you did not arrest me. 56But this has all taken place that the writings of the prophets might be fulfilled.&#8221; Then all the disciples deserted him and fled.</div><div class="s1">Jesus Before the Sanhedrin</div><div class="p"> 57Those who had arrested Jesus took him to Caiaphas the high priest, where the teachers of the law and the elders had assembled. 58But Peter followed him at a distance, right up to the courtyard of the high priest. He entered and sat down with the guards to see the outcome.</div><div class="p"> 59The chief priests and the whole Sanhedrin were looking for false evidence against Jesus so that they could put him to death. 60But they did not find any, though many false witnesses came forward.</div><div class="p">Finally two came forward 61and declared, &#8220;This fellow said, &#8216;I am able to destroy the temple of God and rebuild it in three days.&#8217;&#8198;&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 62Then the high priest stood up and said to Jesus, &#8220;Are you not going to answer? What is this testimony that these men are bringing against you?&#8221; 63But Jesus remained silent.</div><div class="p">The high priest said to him, &#8220;I charge you under oath by the living God: Tell us if you are the Messiah, the Son of God.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 64 &#8220;You have said so,&#8221; Jesus replied. &#8220;But I say to all of you: From now on you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Mighty One and coming on the clouds of heaven.&#8221;#26:64 See Psalm 110:1; Daniel 7:13.</div><div class="p"> 65Then the high priest tore his clothes and said, &#8220;He has spoken blasphemy! Why do we need any more witnesses?  <div class="p">32As they were going out, they met a man from Cyrene, named Simon, and they forced him to carry the cross. 33They came to a place called Golgotha (which means &#8220;the place of the skull&#8221;). 34There they offered Jesus wine to drink, mixed with gall; but after tasting it, he refused to drink it. 35When they had crucified him, they divided up his clothes by casting lots. 36And sitting down, they kept watch over him there. 37Above his head they placed the written charge against him: this is jesus, the king of the jews.</div><div class="p"> 38Two rebels were crucified with him, one on his right and one on his left. 39Those who passed by hurled insults at him, shaking their heads 40and saying, &#8220;You who are going to destroy the temple and build it in three days, save yourself! Come down from the cross, if you are the Son of God!&#8221; 41In the same way the chief priests, the teachers of the law and the elders mocked him. 42&#8220;He saved others,&#8221; they said, &#8220;but he can&#8217;t save himself! He&#8217;s the king of Israel! Let him come down now from the cross, and we will believe in him. 43He trusts in God. Let God rescue him now if he wants him, for he said, &#8216;I am the Son of God.&#8217;&#8198;&#8221; 44In the same way the rebels who were crucified with him also heaped insults on him.</div><div class="s1">The Death of Jesus</div><div class="p"> 45From noon until three in the afternoon darkness came over all the land. 46About three in the afternoon Jesus cried out in a loud voice, &#8220;Eli, Eli,#27:46 Some manuscripts Eloi, Eloi lema sabachthani?&#8221; (which means &#8220;My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?&#8221;).#27:46 Psalm 22:1</div><div class="p"> 47When some of those standing there heard this, they said, &#8220;He&#8217;s calling Elijah.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 48Immediately one of them ran and got a sponge. He filled it with wine vinegar, put it on a staff, and offered it to Jesus to drink. 49The rest said, &#8220;Now leave him alone. Let&#8217;s see if Elijah comes to save him.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 50And when Jesus had cried out again in a loud voice, he gave up his spirit.</div><div class="p"> 51At that moment the curtain of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom. The earth shook, the rocks split 52and the tombs broke open. The bodies of many holy people who had died were raised to life. 53They came out of the tombs after Jesus&#8217; resurrection and#27:53 Or tombs, and after Jesus&#8217; resurrection they went into the holy city and appeared to many people.</div><div class="p"> 54When the centurion and those with him who were guarding Jesus saw the earthquake and all that had happened, they were terrified, and exclaimed, &#8220;Surely he was the Son of God!&#8221;</div><div class="p"> </div>
