Strength of God (Refining Fire + Faith) “For hearts that burn with holy fear, purified in faith and deed, refiner’s fire strengthen what remains” — Fresh Wind, Hillsong Worship Through the process of tempering, steel and other metals are put into intense heat, where they are purified and strengthened. As the heat is applied, the impurities come to the surface and are removed, leaving a pure metal. Interestingly, the hardness of the metal is reduced through the fire, however its flexibility under pressure, or ductility, is increased, causing the overall strength and versatility to rise. There are times in our lives when we go through fires and pressures that are anything but comfortable. Whether it is a physical ailment, financial hardship, relational challenge or spiritual dryness, these times test the very core of our personhood. The fire brings the impurities to the surface, but each of us must choose to remove them from our life. The fire breaks down our own hardness, but there is strength in learning to be flexible. Although these “fires” are not desirable, when we submit our life to the will of the Holy Spirit, they begin to expose the impurities in our life, reduce our “hardness” and give us strength and flexibility for the purpose that God has for our life. 1 Peter 1:6-7 tells us that these trials test the genuineness of our faith and through this, positions us to, “praise, honor and glory at the revelation of Jesus Christ”. We may not see it now, but these times of testing and refining build strength, purity and faith that will ultimately position us to tell others of the goodness of our King and Saviour. Stay the path and know that God is working all things together for good as you continue to walk in purpose and calling, strengthened by the Spirit of God! Reflection & Application: Take a few moments to pause and reflect. Through the testing and trials you’ve gone through, or are going through, what impurities need to be removed in order to have clean hands and a pure heart? What areas of your life are you hardened on? Where is the Spirit of God calling you to be more genuine in your faith? Write these down and determine to stay the path in faith, submitting yourself to the will of our heavenly Father. Prayer: Holy Spirit, I thank you that through these trials, you are purifying my life, strengthening my soul and creating a genuineness of faith. I repent of the impurities in my life. Please cleanse me so that I can live in purity. As I submit my will to yours, strengthen me so that I can show my friends, family and neighbours your glory. In the name of Jesus, amen!
