The restlessness of Egypt is characterized by profound anxiety. Pharaoh’s apprehension about the future causes him to stockpile grain. The foremen have two anxieties – the inability to meet impossible production quotas, and fear that failure will lead to punishment. The whole culture is permeated with anxiety. Worry and anxiety are consuming emotions – they make meaningful rest difficult.
