Let There Be Writing

DAY 6 OF 7

You Don’t Have to Wait for Inspiration Then God blessed them and said, “Be fruitful and multiply. Fill the earth and govern it.” Genesis 1:28 NLT “I’m waiting for inspiration.” I often hear these words from writers. I understand the intention behind them. We want to be careful with our words. It can also be less daunting to write when it feels like the wind of creativity is at our backs, pushing us forward. But after years as a writer, I’ve learned that the most productive days I have are often the ones when I don’t want to write. I show up at my laptop feeling discouraged or tired. I have no idea what to say. I consider quitting and going to work as a barista at my favorite coffee shop. Then I start typing anyway, and God meets me wherever I am that day. In my creative work, I’ve learned sometimes “waiting for inspiration” can be just another form of procrastination. God told the very first humans to be fruitful, multiply, rule the earth, and govern it. In other words, he asked them to take responsibility for making the most of what he entrusted to them. I believe He asks us to do the same. In my life, that looks like writing consistently whether I feel inspired or not. In some ways, not feeling inspired is better because it forces me to rely on God. It requires me to dig deeper and get better at my craft. Pushing past the resistance helps me build creative muscles. It makes me go head-to-head with my fear until its roar doesn’t scare me so much anymore. We don’t have to wait to feel inspired because God is always working in our lives, and we can join Him in any moment. Let’s be fruitful in our writing, multiply our creativity, fill the earth with good words, and govern well the gift that has been entrusted to us. God, thank you for entrusting the gift of writing to me. I want to join You in the creative work You’re doing. Amen. What’s one way you can use your gift of writing today?
