Faith & Love: A One Year Bible Reading Plan - Part 4

DAY 6 OF 20

While reading this part of scripture that outlines the plans of Herod, we are painted a vivid picture of this time in history that the nation of Israel found themselves in. We can clearly see that they were right in the middle of extreme social upheaval, political tension, and fear. This was exactly the environment that Jesus found Himself in at the time of His birth. He was born into a nation at their darkest, and this is exactly what Matthew wants us to discover. Herod was extremely angry and, therefore, brutally cruel in his pursuit to prevent this newborn baby from being a possible threat to his throne. Herod did not understand the meaning and significance of the birth of Jesus. Jesus did not want to have Herod’s throne. Jesus came to be the King that would introduce a new kind of Kingdom: one of true freedom, joy, peace, and wholeness. Jesus, the world’s only redeemer, was to be born into a very uneasy world climate. One of injustice, suffering and pain. But despite all these circumstances, Jesus, the only true King, was born! Jesus, by nature, is a King that brings freedom and new life when everything seems hopeless. He is a King of restoration, making all things new! So, here’s the question. What are the things in your life that seems broken and hopeless? What would those things look like if you surrendered to Jesus as King of your life in those areas? He is the One that is able to make all things new!
