DAY 4 OF 4

In the passage for today, we read an incredible story of the saving power of Jesus. As Mark records, Jesus and his disciples cross the sea of Galilee to the country of the Gerasenes. While the exact location is contested we do know that it existed within the Decapolis - a group of 10 cities located on the south side of the Sea of Galilee in the Greco-Roman region. While there were Jewish communities within the Decapolis, most devout Jews kept to the Northwestern region of the sea of Galilee. The 'other side' was considered Gentile territory which, to a Jew, represented all things impure. The disciples would certainly have been surprised at Jesus' instruction but nevertheless, they all got into the boat and set sail. When they then encountered a raging storm they may even have thought it was a direct consequence of their journey into gentile territory. However, when Jesus miraculously calms the storm they continue on to their destination.

As soon as they arrive at their destination, the disciples no doubt a little shaken, meet a man described as having an unclean spirit. Rejected by his community, he is living by the tombs - a place Jewish people would have avoided since contact with a dead body was considered unclean. The man, drawn to Jesus, falls at his feet, and in a manifestation of his sovereign power, Jesus delivers him from demonic oppression.

The Jewish people believed they were the chosen people of the one true God. They believed that when the Messiah came, he would liberate them from Roman rule. In reality, the Messiah came to liberate all people from sin and death, uniting them with the one true God of all nations. God's promise to Abraham was that He would make him the father of many nations.

The gospel is for all people.

While the promise of Salvation comes through Abraham and the Jewish people, it was never intended to remain only with them. Whether they comprehend it or not, by freeing this man from bondage Jesus is teaching his disciples this truth.

Jesus did not discount anyone from the gospel and neither should we. Perhaps we think some people are beyond reach. However, the unclean spirit tormenting this man reveals himself as Legion. A Legion is a Roman regiment consisting of 6000 soldiers!

Nobody is beyond redemption.

Our mission is to go and proclaim his saving power to all people, in the darkest of places to those who may appear unreachable just as Jesus left the seat of heaven and came to earth for us.

  1. LISTEN: As you reflect on this story, ask the Holy Spirit to show you people who you have labeled as unreachable. Spend some time praying for these people now as the Spirit leads you.
  2. RESPOND: How might God be inviting you to "Go to the other side" in reaching out to these people?
  3. ASK: Ask the Holy Spirit to Strengthen and guide you in obedience to what He has shown you today.
