Living a Happy Life: A 7-Day Devotional for Parents About Living From Acceptance—Not for Acceptance

DAY 4 OF 7

Day Four: Happy Fear

Because people don’t normally think fear and happiness (or blessedness) go together, Psalm 128:1 can sound a bit confusing when you first read it: I am going to be happy if I fear the Lord?

Yes! There is a fear that leads to happiness. There is a trembling that leads to joy.

When does fear make you happy? When you feel the rush of awe and you are safe at the same time. People ride roller coasters to be in awe, and the fear leads to shouts and smiles because they are safely buckled in their seats. The same is true with mountain climbing and parasailing, and with standing safely on the edge of a mountain filled with awe because of the view surrounding you. When awe and safety are combined, the moments are thrilling and enjoyable.

Although not at all the same as physical thrill seeking, when the Bible speaks about fearing the Lord, it is also referring to a sense of awe. We should be in awe and reverence of this great God, the God who created the heavens and the earth, who is all powerful, who knows everything and sees everything. We are in awe, yet because of Jesus, we are safe at the same time. We can stand before this great God because of Jesus. We can enjoy this great God because of Jesus. This amazing God holds us safely to Himself.

When the Bible speaks about happiness, the Bible is not speaking about temporary happiness or relief but lasting joy that comes from knowing God. Even if our daily lives are full of challenges—financial stress, disabilities, illness— we can have lasting joy—true happiness—not because we have perfect surroundings but because we have a perfect Savior.

As your awe and appreciation for God increases, so does your happiness.
