Five Days of Jesus’ Names

DAY 5 OF 5

Jesus Was Sent to Save You

The Old Testament, while not using Jesus’ personal name, anticipates His coming in the form of a Messiah. We run across a number of prayers in the Old Testament which look forward to the coming of the Messiah. We read sermons about how justice would rule at the coming of the Messiah. Its central message revolves around the anticipation of the One who was to come and live out the embodiment of the Messianic hope.

That hope is tethered to the salvation Jesus brought. Every problem in our lives today is related to sin. God’s judgment on sin was satisfied by the sacrificial birth and death of His Son. We are now debt-free before a Holy God. Jesus’ role as Savior addresses all levels of what we truly need because it is in addressing the spiritual need for forgiveness of sin that we find access to the strength, authority, and power to overcome sin’s impact and influence in our lives.

Additional study:

1. Both Matthew 1 and Luke 3 re-tell the lineage of Jesus, but from different perspectives. Why was it important to cover the lineage of both mother and father in re-telling Jesus’ ancestral line?

2. Read Hebrews 1. List as many names of Jesus that are references through descriptive terms or attributes in this passage.
