Sermon Notes

“For I received from the Lord what I also passed on to you: The Lord Jesus, on the night he was betrayed, took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and said, “This is my body, which is for you; do this in remembrance of me.” In the same way, after supper he took the cup, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood; do this, whenever you drink it, do it in remembrance of me." For whenever you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until he comes.” - 1 Corinthians 11:23-26

THE ALTAR OF COMMUNION REMINDS US OF OUR REDEMPTION

Slide 3
On the first day of the Feast of Unleavened Bread, the disciples came to Jesus and asked, 'Where do you want us to make preparations for you to eat the Passover?' He replied, 'Go into the city to a certain man and tell him, "The teacher says: My appointed time is near. I am going to celebrate the Passover with my disciples at your house"' So the disciples did as Jesus had directed them and prepared the Passover. - Matthew 26:17-19

Slide 4
"I will bring you out … I will free you from being slaves … I will redeem you … I will take you as my own people, and I will be your God." - Exodus 6:6-7

Slide 5
The Passover reminded them that sin is a life of bondage.
The Passover reminded them that death will pass over every house.

THE ALTAR OF COMMUNION REVEALS OUR HEART

Slide 7
When evening came, Jesus was reclining at the table with the Twelve. And while they were eating, he said, “Truly I tell you, one of you will betray me.” - Matthew 26:20-21

Slide 8
They were very sad and began to say to him one after the other, “Surely you don’t mean me, Lord?” Jesus replied, “The one who has dipped his hand into the bowl with me will betray me. The Son of Man will go just as it is written about him. But woe to that man who betrays the Son of Man! It would be better for him if he had not been born. Matthew 26:22-24

Slide 9
Then Judas, the one who would betray him, said, “Surely you don’t mean me, Rabbi?” Jesus answered, “You have said so.” - Matthew 26:25

Slide 10
Then Jesus told them, “This very night you will all fall away on account of me, for it is written: ‘I will strike the shepherd, and the sheep of the flock will be scattered.’ - Matthew 26:31

Slide 11
Even my close friend, whom I trusted, he who shared my bread, has lifted up his heel against me.- Psalms 41:9

Slide 14
Then he took a cup, and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying, "Drink from it, all of you. This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins. I tell you, I will not drink from this fruit of the vine from now on until that day when I drink it new with you in my Father’s kingdom." - Matthew 26:27-29

Slide 15
"Look, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world! - John 1:29

“led like a lamb to the slaughter,” - Isaiah 53:7

In Isaiah 53:5, Isaiah foreshadows and says, “But he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was on him, and by his wounds we are healed.”
