Sunday 10:00 AM

1 Peter 4:7-11

This week we finish our Culture Code Series. In this series we ask the question, “What should be the culture of the church?” We have explored the cultural values of love, honour, encouragement, unity, and forgiveness. This week we take a look at service.
Dirty Jobs
There is an old story about four people named Everybody, Somebody, Anybody and Nobody. There was an important job to be done and Everybody was sure that Somebody would do it. Anybody could have done it, but Nobody did it. Somebody got angry about that, because it was Everybody’s job. Everybody thought Anybody could do it, but Nobody realized that Everybody wouldn’t do it. It ended up that Everybody blamed Somebody when Nobody did what Anybody could have.

Confused yet?

John 13:12-15

Jesus and his disciples were gathered together for a meal. It was customary that someone would wash their feet before they ate together.

Whose job should it have been to wash the feet of those at the table? Why does Jesus washing the feet of his followers deserve such a mention?
Use It, Don't Lose It

1 Peter 4:10-11

When he washed his disciples’ feet Jesus set an example of a culture of service amongst his followers. In the verses above, Peter explained what that looks like.

We often keep the best for ourselves. Wanting to hold onto that which makes us feel most valuable. But is that the example that Peter encourages us in?

What are we called to do with those most valuable of gifts?

But Who Gets The Credit?

1 Peter 4:11

When we make the time to serve others, who do we want the glory to go to? There's always that part of us that wants to be recognised, be praised, be valued.

But who deserves the praise? Is it us? Or is it He that builds in us the ability to serve?
'Before you post something on social media, stop and ask yourself;
"Who does this bring glory to? Who (or what purpose) does this serve?"'
If You Want To Be First, You Have To Come Last

Mark 10:41-45

The world celebrates greatness. We raise up and heap praise on those that succeed, and gain notoriety, glory, or fame.

But does true greatness look like someone "lording it over" others? Or does true greatness take on a much more humble, service oriented life?
'I am not here to be served but to serve; I am not here for my own glory but for my God's.'
More Than Words

John 13:14-15

Jesus didn’t just teach his disciples about serving others.

He got up and washed their stinky feet. He set them an example of serving others.
So whose feet (metaphorical or literal) will you wash?

How will you serve?
