Matthew 7:24-29

We all know foundations are important
Whether we are builders or engineers or not, we all know that having a good foundation is crucial to the stability and longevity of any building. Today’s final passage from the Sermon on the Mount prompts us to ask ourselves an important question: What is the foundation that your life is built upon?
A story about ancient building practices

Matthew 7:24, Matthew 7:26

Jesus told his disciples and the gathered crowd a story about ancient building practices. After all, Jesus was involved in the construction trade before he began his ministry. The basics of the story are that rock is a good foundation and sand is a poor foundation. In Israel though, near the lake of Galilee where Jesus was when he spoke these words, the sand around the lake became dry and hard during the summer months. The point is sometimes things that are not good foundations for life look like they are when things are going well.

The Wise Build Upon the Rock

Matthew 7:24-25

Jesus didn’t promise his followers a life free from trouble. What he did promise is that if they built their life upon his word, then they would be able to stand through the storms of life.
How does the foundation for your life look when the storms come?
Building Upon Anything Else is Foolish

Matthew 7:26-27

There are lots of things in life that might look like a good foundation when everything is going well. But when the storms of life come they fall apart. The only foundation that can withstand every storm is Jesus and his word.
Is your life built upon that foundation?

Matthew 24:35

Salvation Prayer
Lord Jesus Christ,
I am sorry for the things that I have done wrong and sinful in my life. Please forgive me. I turn away from everything that I now is wrong and sinful. Thank you that you died on the cross for me so that I could be forgiven and set free. Thank you for your forgiveness and the gift of your Holy Spirit to guide me. I commit my life to follow you. I want you to be the foundation of my life.
Amen.
