Returning to the Sermon on the Mount

This week we return to our series on The Sermon on the Mount: The Teachings of Jesus. We began this series last year but if you missed that don’t worry, you don’t need to have heard those sermons to make sense of today.  If you want to catch up on the first part of this series, you can listen to the recordings here:

Judgmentalism is Incompatible with God’s Kingdom
In this part of the Sermon on the Mount the Jesus taught his disciples about judging others. The example the disciples would have been most familiar with was that of the Pharisees who were renowned for self-righteousness and judgmentalism. Is this the example that Jesus’ followers should follow?

Are we truly disciples of Jesus or are we really disciples of the Pharisees?
They Heart of Judgmentalism is Hypocrisy
Jesus words reveal the heart of judgmentalism, Hypocrisy. A hypocrite is someone who wears a mask. Judgmentalism is a mask people wear to cover our own inner faults, failings and sinfulness. When Jesus’ disciples are tempted to be judgmental which should ask ourselves a question. What about myself am I trying to hide?
Removing Both Planks and Specks
Jesus doesn’t want us to continue living with logs, planks or specks in our eyes. He wants us to be set free from our sin, healed from our hurts and restored from our failures. But performing eye surgery with a log in your eye is not the best way for anyone to be set free. How do we be free from sin, faults and failures? Jesus has the answer. Jesus is the answer.

Life Group Discussion Questions Below

As our life groups gather this week, we have attached our reference verse and some questions to prompt a deeper discussion and search into this week's topic.

If you are not currently part of a life group, and would like to join a small group of like minded people in fellowship and connection during the week, please contact Nick on 0417472474 to register your interest.
1. Have you ever been hurt by the judgment of others? How did this make you feel?
2. Have you ever had judgmental thoughts towards others? What feelings go together with judgmental thoughts?
3. What do you believe drives our tendency to want to judge others instead of deal with our own issues?
4. According to Jesus whose issues, faults, failures and sin should we pay the most attention to?
5. The antidote to judgmentalism is confession of our own sin. What does a healthy practice of confession look like in your opinion?

There may be people in your group who have been badly wounded by the judgment of others. Take some time to pray for one another for healing and for uprooting of judgmentalism from your lives.
You may wish to discuss if this life group can become a place of confession. This is a decision that each group will need to make together.
