Overwhelmed: Dealing with Disillusionment

Overwhelmed: Dealing with Disillusionment

Welcome to Grace Chapel! Emotions not properly dealt with in the power of God will turn into anger, bitterness, and resentment. When the dark cloud of depression follows us long enough, or anxiety clings to us like chicken pox that won’t go away, we can begin to grow angry toward our circumstances, others, and God. In this message, we look at various passages today as we try to understand how to deal with feelings of anger, disappointment and angst in light of God’s power, peace and joy.

Two kinds of anger toward God:
· UNBELIEVING anger
· BELIEVING anger

Job 18:4

Job 30:20-21

Job’s process toward surrender to God:
1. Job SUFFERED.
2. Job felt ANGRY.
3. Job expressed his anger towards God in QUESTIONING and wrestling.
4. Job saw who God was, was OVERCOME by His character, and trusted Him.
5. Job SURRENDERED to God’s will.

Job 40:1-2

El Shaddai: The God who OVERTHROWS

Exodus 15:6

Matthew 19:26

Who are you wrestling with?
When God overpowers us, He unbinds us, then He rebinds us to Himself—in an exclusive relationship.
Charles Spurgeon, “While I regarded God as a tyrant, I thought my sin a trifle; but when I knew Him to be my Father, then I mourned that I could ever have kicked against Him. When I thought God was hard, I found it easy to sin; but when I found God so kind, so good, so overflowing with compassion, I smote upon my breast to think that I could ever have rebelled against One who loved me so and sought my good.”

John 6:66-69

Peter said to Jesus: - v. 69
· “We BELIEVE”
· “We KNOW”
A Christian defined: "One who cannot walk away."
El Shaddai will eventually overpower us. He can turn our anxiety into peace, our grieving into comfort, and our doubt into belief.
This week I will…

• Memorize Job 13:15, “Though He slay me, I will hope in Him; yet I will argue my ways to His face.” (ESV)
• Pray for God to break any disillusionment that may be blocking me from seeing God’s faithfulness in my life.
• List my objections toward God and humbly ask Him to change my perspective.
• Meet with another Christian friend who will help me deal with my anger.
