I’m not sure if you know this, but a magnetic compass almost never shows “true north.” It has been historically known that “magnetic north” waders in diverse directions and (at some periods in the earth's history), reverses so that magnetic north pole has been near the geographic south pole.
What we know as “true north” is north according to the earth's axis. Most of us only know magnetic north. We follow what a needle driven by a magnetic pull and have learned to follow that.
Throughout the centuries, some have claimed that Jesus is entirely absent from the Old Testament. But Jesus Himself addressed this to the leaders of His day. He implored them to re-look at the Hebrew Scriptures to see that the prophets of old were pointing toward Him. “You study the Scriptures diligently because you think that in them you have eternal life. These are the very Scriptures that testify about me, yet you refuse to come to me to have life” (John 5:39–40).
Jesus simply pointed out: The Prophets were pointing toward Him.
This December, we invite you into a journey on our Sunday mornings where we dive into those words of the Old Testament prophets to see how they point toward this baby in a manger, the Savior we celebrate. And our prayer is that our lives, like these scriptures, will point toward Jesus, our True North.
