RECLINE means to lean or incline backwards, to lie or REPOSE.

REPOSE means: the act of resting, or the state of being at rest. Repose is also a state of mind: freedom from worry. As a verb, repose means to rest or relax.

So Jesus reclined with, lay down with, rested with and relaxed with tax collectors and sinners in a worry free environment.
Two Greek words are used here and interpreted as reclined at and reclined with.

1. anakeimai: (an-ak-i'-mahee) to be laid up, to recline. Strongs concordance 345.
Original Word: ἀνάκειμαι
Part of Speech: Verb
Phonetic Spelling: (an-ak-i'-mahee)
Definition: to be laid up, to recline
Usage: I recline, especially at a dinner-table.

2. sunanakeimai: to recline with (at table). Strongs concordance 4873.
Word Origin: from sun (with, together with) and anakeimai
Original Word: συνανάκειμαι
Part of Speech: Verb
Phonetic Spelling: (soon-an-ak'-i-mahee)
Definition: to recline with (at table)
Usage: I recline at table with.

What is a Triclinium

The Roman table and couches combined was called a triclinium.
A Roman dining room was called a triclinium because it contained three couches, set around a central table. The table was a low block with couches around it on three sides. The couches would be covered by a cushion, or a cushion would be provided for the guest to lean on.
The guests approached the table from behind the couches, then reclined on their left side, supporting their head on their left elbow, leaving their right hand free to take the food. A normal Roman triclinium would seat nine people, with three on each couch.

Mercy: eleos (el-eh-oss): Compassion, tender mercy, kindness, an outward manifestation of pity. Basically goodness and kindness to others.

That’s what reclining at a table with and eating with others is doing! That’s why radical, ordinary, hospitality is so powerful because it is a practical demonstration of mercy.
So Jesus tells the Pharisees to go and learn what this means: “I desire mercy and not sacrifice.” We could say it means:

“I am more pleased with acts of kindness, helping others, doing good to others than with the mere external compliance with the duties of religion.”
- Religion is more obsessed with self than others.
- Religion is more obsessed with things than people.
- Religion is more obsessed with duties than mercy.
- Religion is more obsessed with my name than His name

The Book of Hosea

Watch our Read Scripture video on the book of Hosea, which breaks down the literary design of the book and its flow of thought. In this book, Hosea accuses Israel of breaking their covenant with God and warns them of the tragic consequences to follow.

What is absent: Truth, mercy, knowledge of God
What God desires: Mercy, knowledge of God

In order for you to grow in mercy you need to grow in your knowledge of God.

The Hebrew word used for knowledge is Yada which describes personal, relational knowledge. It’s the difference between knowing about someone and actually knowing that someone.

Ravi Zacharius quote

“ Which is the greatest commandment. Out of 613, it is fascinating to me that Jesus did not select one. What he said was this. To love the Lord your God with all your heart and all your soul and all your mind and all your strength and you shall love your neighbour as yourself. He said on these 2 laws hang all of the laws and the prophets. Why did he not give one? Because hinged on one was the inextricable imperative of the second. You cannot say you love God and hate your neighbour. And the imperative to love God is because when you take all of the Commandments and take the 10 of them which were key if there is one word that the 10 Commandments can be reduced to, it is the word sacred. Your life is sacred. Your property is sacred. Your marriage is sacred. Your time is sacred. And so is your neighbour’s. You cannot violate your neighbour’s sacredness of right and tell your neighbour that you still love God. I think what Jesus says here is remarkable.”
Acts of the Apostles 9:4-5 NLT

We Value the Power of Prayer

“Supernaturally Transforming Lives and Circumstances”

“Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.” – Philippians 4:6 NIV
As a church we have numerous stories of people who have had prayer answered and seen incredible miracles take place. We have stories of; miraculous healings, miraculous protection from danger and harm, children being born when it seemed impossible, hospitals and orphan’s villages being built in Haiti and many, many more examples that God still answers prayer today and miracles do happen.

“Our Church is not built on the talents and gifts of a few but on the sacrifice of many.” –Brian Houston

The Vine church is as effective as our people. The greatness of our church relies on the heart of our people and their willingness to serve others. Our church functions because ordinary people give their time, talents and energy willingly and cheerfully to serve others.

Joining a team is an excellent way to get connected into the life of our church, make friends and help the church to grow. In fact the growth in health and size of our church depends on every member serving and “doing their own special work”:

“…as each part does its own special work, it helps the other parts grow, so that the whole body is growing and full of love.”
Eph.4:16 NLT
