2 Samuel 11:1-5
Today we will consider one of the most tragic stories in Scripture. It’s a story that reflects the pain and disappointment that enters our lives when we allow APATHYto rule us.
APATHY: lack of interest, enthusiasm, or concern.
15 “I know your works: you are neither cold nor hot. Would that you were either cold or hot! 16 So, because you are lukewarm, and neither hot nor cold, I will spit you out of my mouth.”
Revelation 3:15-16 (ESV)
1 “In the spring of the year, the time when kings go out to battle, David sent Joab, and his servants with him, and all Israel. And they ravaged the Ammonites and besieged Rabbah. But David remained at Jerusalem. It happened, late one afternoon, when David arose from his couch and was walking on the roof of the king's house, that he saw from the roof a woman bathing; and the woman was very beautiful. 3 And David sent and inquired about the woman. And one said, “Is not this Bathsheba, the daughter of Eliam, the wife of Uriah the Hittite?” 4 So David sent messengers and took her, and she came to him, and he lay with her. (Now she had been purifying herself from her uncleanness.) Then she returned to her house. 5 And the woman conceived, and she sent and told David, “I am pregnant.”
2 Samuel 11:1-5 (ESV)
What does this story teach you about standing strong and eliminating apathy?
1. NEVER ABANDON YOUR ASSIGNMENT! (v. 1)
2. NEVER ALLOW A BAD DECISION TO DEFINE YOU! (v. 2)
In the wake of his success—David settled for the couch!
Apathy often follows seasons of great success!
3. AVOID TEMPTATION AT ALL COSTS! (vv. 3-4)
41 “ Watch and pray that you may not enter into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.”
Matthew 26:41 (NIV)
How can we protect ourselves from the tendency to become apathetic?
— Study God’s Word!
— Seek God’s Presence!
— Devote yourself to Kingdom matters!
— Surround yourself with the Godly people!
