What does it really mean to be Spirit-Filled? 3/24/24

Acts 2:1-4 NASBWhen the day of Pentecost had come, they were all together in one place. 2And suddenly a noise like a violent rushing wind came from heaven, and it filled the whole house where they were sitting. 3And tongues that looked like fire appeared to them, distributing themselves, and a tongue rested on each one of them. 4And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with different tongues, as the Spirit was giving them the ability to speak out.

I. Why the issue of being Spirit-filled is so important.

A. The idea of being Spirit-filled is at the heart of New Testament life.

B. It seems there is a bias (whether religious or non-religious) in all of us that resists some form of The Spirit’s dynamic.

C. The Spirit-filled life is a proven key to individual as well as congregational life, growth, and vitality.

D. When honest, Biblical Pneumatology is embraced and pursued, Revival and Awakening is usually the result.

II. The Holy Spirit and Believers

A. See The Essentialsby Dr. J. Stephen Chitty

B. He is in Every Believer.

C. Is Spirit Baptism an issue of presence, power, or providence?

III. Concepts of a Spirit-Filled Christian

A. “Baptized in The Holy Spirit”

1. Acts 1:4-5 NASB Gathering them together, He commanded them not to leave Jerusalem, but to wait for what the Father had promised, “Which,” He said, “you heard of from Me; 5 for John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now.”

2. The Concept: The Spirit comes upon us to fully penetrate every aspect of who we are.

3. The word was used…

a. To describe the dyeing of a garment.

b. To describe the sinking of a ship.

c. To describe the dipping of a piece of food into wine.

d. To describe the drowning of a man.

B. “The Spirit as He comes upon you.”

1. Acts 1:8 NASB but you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be My witnesses both in Jerusalem and in all Judea, and Samaria, and as far as the remotest part of the earth.”

2. The Concept: Successful Kingdom service is through Holy Spirit enablement.

3. Samuel lost all ability and anointing not through the loss of his hair, but through the loss of Spirit presence.

4. Judges 16:20 NASB She said, “The Philistines are upon you, Samson!” And he awoke from his sleep and said, “I will go out as at other times and shake myself free.” But he did not know that the Lord had departed from him.

C. “The Spirit as He is poured out upon you”

1. Acts 2:32-33 NASB It is this Jesus whom God raised up, a fact to which we are all witnesses. 33Therefore, since He has been exalted at the right hand of God, and has received the promise of the Holy Spirit from the Father, He has poured out this which you both see and hear.

2. The Concept: The Holy Spirit is given to us with abundance and generosity.

3. A gator-aid bottle or a gator-aid cooler?

4. A water bucket or a water hose?

5. The Chicago World’s Fair exhibition
D. The Spirit that has fallen upon you.

1. Acts 8:14-17 NASB Now when the apostles in Jerusalem heard that Samaria had received the word of God, they sent them Peter and John, 15who came down and prayed for them that they would receive the Holy Spirit. 16(For He had not yet fallen upon any of them; they had simply been baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.) 17 Then they began laying their hands on them, and they were receiving the Holy Spirit.

2. Acts 10:44-45 NASB While Peter was still speaking these words, the Holy Spirit fell upon all those who were listening to the message. 45All the Jewish believers who came with Peter were amazed, because the gift of the Holy Spirit had also been poured out on the Gentiles.

3. Acts 11:15-16 NASB And as I began to speak, the Holy Spirit fell upon them just as He did upon us at the beginning. 16And I remembered the word of the Lord, how He used to say, ‘John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.’

4. The Concept: There is a revenue for and a submission to the Closeness (The Presence of) Holy Spirit.

5. Don’t resist Him.

6. Don’t quench Him.

7. Don’t grieve Him.

E. The Spirit that has filled you.

1. Acts 2:4 NASB And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with different tongues, as the Spirit was giving them the ability to speak out.

2. Acts 4:8 NASB Then Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, said to them….

3. Acts 4:31 NASB And when they had prayed, the place where they had gathered together was shaken, and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak the word of God with boldness.

4. Acts 9:17 NASB So Ananias departed and entered the house, and after laying his hands on him said, “Brother Saul, the Lord Jesus, who appeared to you on the road by which you were coming, has sent me so that you may regain your sight and be filled with the Holy Spirit.”

5. Acts 13:9-11 NASB But Saul, who was also known as Paul, filled with the Holy Spirit, stared at him, 10and said, “You who are full of all deceit and fraud, you son of the devil, you enemy of all righteousness, will you not stop making crooked the straight ways of the Lord? 11Now, behold, the hand of the Lord is upon you, and you will be blind and not see the sun for a time.” And immediately a mist and a darkness fell upon him, and he went about seeking those who would lead him by the hand.

6. The Concept: I am given everything I need to fulfill the commands, expectations, and destiny which are part of my service to God.

F. To receive the Gift of The Holy Spirit

1. Acts 2:37-39 NASB Now when they heard this, they were pierced to the heart, and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, “Brothers, what are we to do?” 38Peter said to them, “Repent, and each of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins; and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. 39For the promise is for you and your children and for all who are far away, as many as the Lord our God will call to Himself.”

2. The Concept: The Spirit-filled life is a result of the Extravagant Love of The Father. It is for you and all your generations to come.

3. “I will not leave you fatherless and as orphans.” – Jesus

4. “For you and all your generations”
