1 Timothy 6:6-10 NKJV But godliness with contentment is great gain. 7 For we brought nothing into the world, and we can take nothing out of it. 8 But if we have food and clothing, we will be content with that. 9 Those who want to get rich fall into temptation and a trap and into many foolish and harmful desires that plunge people into ruin and destruction. 10 For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs.

Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs.

I. Understanding the Biblical Concept

A. Negative:

1. Contentment is not lack of ambition.


2. Contentment is not a lack of goals.


3. Contentment is not passivity.

a. Joshua 7:7 And Joshua said, “Alas, Lord God, why have You brought this people over the Jordan at all—to deliver us into the hand of the Amorites, to destroy us? Oh, that we had been content, and dwelt on the other side of the Jordan!


B. Positive:

1. Contentment is a state of satisfaction that does not depend on circumstances.


2. Contentment is a trust that is not shaken by circumstances.


3. Contentment functions as a thermostat, not a thermometer.



II. Walking in the Freedom of Contentment

A. Step Number One - Be satisfied with the Presence of God.

1. Hebrews 13:5 Let your conduct be without covetousness; be content with such things as you have. For He Himself has said, “I will never leave you nor forsake you.”


2. Jeremiah 9:23-24 “Let not the wise man glory in his wisdom, Let not the mighty man glory in his might, Nor let the rich man glory in his riches; 24 But let him who glories glory in this, That he understands and knows Me, That I am the Lord, exercising lovingkindness, judgment, and righteousness in the earth.
III. For in these I delight,” says the Lord.

A. Step Number Two - Remember everything we have belongs to The Lord.

1. “For we brought nothing into the world, and we can take nothing out of it.”


2. This is true of treasure, time, and talent — and everything else that has been given to us.


3. True riches have been described as “what we have that the world didn’t give us and death can’t take away.”



B. Step Number Three - Stop comparing yourself with others.

1. Exodus 29:17 “You shall not covet your neighbor’s house; you shall not covet your neighbor’s wife, nor his male servant, nor his female servant, nor his ox, nor his donkey, nor anything that is your neighbor’s.”


2. Mark 12:43-44 So He called His disciples to Himself and said to them, “Assuredly, I say to you that this poor widow has put in more than all those who have given to the treasury; 44 for they all put in out of their abundance, but she out of her poverty put in all that she had, her whole livelihood.”


3. Whether our money, our careers, or our ministries - everything will move on from us to another. Have you ever considered that what you cherish now first belonged to someone else?
