PHILIPPIANS NOVEMBER 15, 2023
GLORY TO GOD (18-23)

SCRIPTURE
I am well supplied, having received from Epaphroditus the gifts you sent, a fragrant offering, a sacrifice acceptable and pleasing to God. And my God will supply every need of yours according to His riches in glory in Christ Jesus. To our God and Father be glory forever and ever. Amen. Philippians 4:18-23

INTRO

A doxology almost always comes following a doctrinal truth.

Now to Him who is able to do far more abundantly beyond all that we ask or think, according to the power that works within us, to Him be the glory in the church and in Christ Jesus to all generations forever and ever. Amen. Ephesians 3:20-21

UNDERSTANDING GLORY

1/ There is a general glory of God.

In a very general sense, the glory of God is the outward expression of His holiness.

And they were calling to one another: “Holy, holy, holy is the Lord Almighty; the whole earth is full of His glory.” Isaiah 6:3

2/ There are specific ways God manifests His glory.

God reveals His glory in creative and redemptive acts.

The heavens proclaim the glory of God. The skies display His craftsmanship. Day after day they continue to speak; night after night they make Him known. They speak without a sound or word; their voice is never heard. Yet their message has gone throughout the earth, and their words to all the world. Psalm 19:1-4

God reveals His glory in light.

God reveals His glory in presence.

God reveals His glory in the Son of God.

The Word became flesh and made His dwelling among us. We have seen His glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth. John 1:14

3/ There is an expressed glory to God.

When people give glory, it is their expression to God. When we fail to give God glory, consequences follow.

For although they knew God, they neither glorified Him as God nor gave thanks to Him, but their thinking became futile and their foolish hearts were darkened. Romans 1:21

4/ There is glory reserved for God alone.

This does not relate to encouragement or appreciation, but to an unhealthy elevation.

When the day arrived, Herod put on his royal robes, sat on his throne, and made a speech to them. The people gave him a great ovation, shouting, “It’s the voice of a god, not of a man!” Instantly, an angel of the Lord struck Herod with a sickness, because he accepted the people’s worship instead of giving the glory to God. So he was consumed with worms and died. Acts 12:21-23

“Don’t touch the three Gs. The girls, the gold, or the glory.” Steve Hill

5/ The glory of God must be respected.

When the glory of God comes through presence, we must be aware.

“…you did not know the time of your visitation.” Luke 19:44

When the glory of God comes through presence, we must be reverent.

PHILIPPIANS
THE GIFT THAT PLEASES THE LORD (14-20)

SCRIPTURE
Yet it was kind of you to share my trouble. And you Philippians yourselves know that in the beginning of the gospel, when I left Macedonia, no church entered into a partnership with me in giving and receiving, except only you. Even in Thessalonica you sent me help for my needs once and again. Not that I seek the gift, but I seek the fruit that increases to your credit. I have received full payment, and more. I am well supplied, having received from Ephaphroditus the gifts you sent, a fragrant offering, a sacrifice acceptable and pleasing to God. And my God will supply every need of yours according to His Richard in glory in Christ Jesus. To our God and Father be glory forever and ever. Amen.

A FEW THINGS TO REMEMBER ABOUT GIVING

1/ When we give, a partnership is formed with a church or ministry.

2/ When we give, a partnership is formed with the Lord.

“If you do,” says the Lord of Heaven’s Armies, “I will open the windows of heaven for you. I will pour out a blessing so great you won’t have enough room to take it in! Try it! Put Me to the test! Your crops will be abundant, for I will guard them from insects and disease. Your grapes will not fall from the vine before they are ripe,” says the Lord of Heaven’s Armies. “Then all nations will call you blessed, for your land will be such a delight,” says the Lord of Heaven’s Armies. Malachi 3:10-12

3/ When we give, our motives are weighed.

People may be pure in their own eyes, but the Lord examines their motives. Proverbs 16:2

Each one must give as he has decided in his heart, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. 2 Corinthians 9:7

4/ When we give, we will be rewarded.

The point is this: whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows bountifully will also reap bountifully. 2 Corinthians 9:6

But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where months and vermin do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. Matthew 6:20

“Then these righteous ones will reply, ‘Lord, when did we ever see you hungry and feed you? Or thirsty and give you something to drink? Or a stranger and show you hospitality? Or naked and give you clothing? When did we ever see you sick or in prison and visit you?’ And the King will say, ‘I tell you the truth, when you did it to one of the least of My brothers and sisters, you were doing it to Me!’” Matthew 25:37-40
