Betrayal and Arrest of Jesus
While he was still speaking, Judas came, one of the twelve, and with him a great crowd with swords and clubs, from the chief priests and the elders of the people. 48Now the betrayer had given them a sign, saying, “The one I will kiss is the man; seize him.” 49And he came up to Jesus at once and said, “Greetings, Rabbi!” And he kissed him. 50Jesus said to him, “Friend, do what you came to do.” Then they came up and laid hands on Jesus and seized him. 51And behold, one of those who were with Jesus stretched out his hand and drew his sword and struck the servant[g] of the high priest and cut off his ear. 52Then Jesus said to him, “Put your sword back into its place. For all who take the sword will perish by the sword. 53Do you think that I cannot appeal to my Father, and he will at once send me more than twelve legions of angels? 54But how then should the Scriptures be fulfilled, that it must be so?” Matthew 26:47-54
1. Zeal is for something not against someone.
a. Jesus was Zealous.
b. The Zealots - similar to the Pharisee’s and Sadducees (Simon the Zealot (Matthew 2:10); Judas the Galilean (Acts 5:37)
c. Some people are driven by confrontation and violence.
d. Make sure your Zeal isn’t against someone but for the Lord.
2. Zeal should lead to obedience.
3. Zeal can be corrupted by pride.
Christians should be zealous.
1. To repent.
2. To correct wrongs.

1. Be zealous but be careful.
Romans 10:1-2 Brothers, my heart's desire and prayer to God for them is that they may be saved. 2For I bear them witness that they have a zeal for God, but not according to knowledge.
Proverbs 19:2-3 Ignorant zeal is worthless; haste makes waste. 3People ruin their lives by their own stupidity, so why does God always get blamed?
2. Don’t fight the wrong battles.
o Peter was fighting a battle Jesus never asked him too.
3. Marry your zeal with meekness.
o Blessed are the meek for they shall inherit the Earth.
o Jesus- “I am meek and lowly of heart.”
