JESUS IS GOD (VERSE 5-11)

SCRIPTURE

Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus, who, though He was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied Himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. And being found in human form, He humbled Himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. Therefore God has highly exalted Him and bestowed on Him the name that is above every name, so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. Philippians 2:5-11, ESV

REASONS WE BELIEVE JESUS IS GOD

1/ Jesus accepted the worship of His followers.

Then those who were in the boat worshiped Him, saying, “Truly You are the Son of God.” Matthew 14:33, NIV

The Magi worship at Christ’s birth, Mary worships at Bethany, and the disciples worship at the Resurrection as well.

2/ Jesus fulfilled Messianic prophecies.

Jesus fulfilled more than 300 prophecies (60 major) from hundreds of years prior.

These prophecies include His birthplace, words, lineage, death, betrayal, etc.

1017

3/ Jesus demonstrated the power of God.

“Even though you don’t believe Me, believe the miracles, that you may know and understand that the Father is in Me, and I in the Father.” John 10:38

Jesus performed 40 major miracles, including calming a storm, curing a tree, and healing the lame.

4/ Jesus is referred to as “Lord” by New Testament writers.

This term translated is the equivalent of YHWH from the Old Testament.

5/ Jesus forgives sins.

“Take heart, son; your sins are forgiven.” Matthew 9:2, NIV

6/ Jesus confesses He is God through the “I Am” statements.

This is connected to Moses encounter with God in Exodus 3:4.

7/ Jesus was crucified for making Himself equal with God.

For this reason they tried all the more to kill Him; not only was He breaking the Sabbath, but He was even calling God His own Father, making Himself equal with God. John 5:18, NIV

“We are not stoning You for any good work,” they replied, “but for blasphemy, because You, a mere man, claim to be God.” John 10:33, NIV

8/ Jesus resurrected.

THE NATURES OF CHRIST

1/ Jesus had a divine nature.

2/ Jesus had a human nature.

“Christ is truly human and truly God, and…these two natures are perfectly united with no mixture, confusion, separation, or division.” R.C. Sproul

TWO HERESIES

1/ Adoptionism is the belief that Jesus was human and became divine.

2/ Docetism is the belief that Jesus was not human, but completely divine.

CLOSE

We must learn to “think about Jesus as we do about God.” 2 Clement 1:12

“We, then, following the holy Fathers, all with one consent, teach men to confess on and the same Son, our Lord Jesus Christ, the same perfect in Godhead and also perfect in manhood; truly God and truly man, of a reasonable soul and body; consubstantial with the Father according to the Godhead, and consubstantial with us according to the Manhood; in all things like unto us, without sin; begotten before all ages of the Father according to the Godhead, and in these latter days, for us and for our salvation, born of the virgin Mary, the Mother of God, according to the Manhood; one and the same Christ, Son, Lord, only begotten, to be acknowledged in two natures, inconfusedly, unchangeably, indivisibly, inseparably; the distinction of natures being by no means taken away by the union, but rather the property of each nature being preserved, and concurring in one Person and one Subsistence, not parted or divided into two persons, but one and the same Son, and only begotten, God the Word, the Lord Jesus Christ; as the prophets from the beginning concerning Him, and the Lord Jesus Christ Himself has taught us, and the Creed of the holy Fathers has handed down to us.” The Chalcedonian Creed (A.D. 451)
