Gospel - Good News
Proclamation of Jesus the Christ - the anointed one - the saving King

---
An orienting story
We all need stories and practices to orient us in the truth

---
Questions arise from the gospel announcement that Jesus is King

WHAT'S THIS KING LIKE?
- Secure
- Set's his own pace
- Welcomes all - calls the least expected
- Merciful
- Compassionate
- Justice
- Humble
The good news is about a king…unlike any other

WHAT'S HIS KINGDOM LIKE?
- It’s like…a landowner who wants to pay everyone the same amount no matter how long they joined (Matthew 20:1)
- It’s like a treasure, like a pearl, that when you find it, when you see it…you’ll trade everything to have it (Matthew 13:44-45)
- It’s like…a mustard seed…gently, slowly, humbly… (Matthew 13:31)
- It’s like a wedding feast where everyone is invited (Matthew 22:2)
- It’s like a son who wandered away…lost himself…lost all hope of truly returning… (Luke 15)

What’s he like? What’s his kingdom like?
Beautiful

The Good News of this king Jesus raises questions like….

HOW IS HIS KINGSHIP BENEFICIAL? WHAT HAS HE DONE? WHAT BENEFITS HAS HE BROUGHT?

1 Corinthians 15:1-8
1Now, brothers and sisters, I want to remind you of the gospel I preached to you, which you received and on which you have taken your stand. 2 By this gospel you are saved, if you hold firmly to the word I preached to you. Otherwise, you have believed in vain.

3 For what I received I passed on to you as of first importance: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, 4 that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures, 5 and that he appeared to Cephas,[b] and then to the Twelve. 6 After that, he appeared to more than five hundred of the brothers and sisters at the same time, most of whom are still living, though some have fallen asleep. 7 Then he appeared to James, then to all the apostles, 8 and last of all he appeared to me also, as to one abnormally born.

Romans 5:17
17 For if, by the trespass of the one man, death reigned through that one man, how much more will those who receive God’s abundant provision of grace and of the gift of righteousness reign in life through the one man, Jesus Christ!

Adoption
We join something that exists before us and carries on after us
Eph 1:5, Exodus 4:22, Rom 9:4, Gal 4:5, Heb 2:11

Eternal Life
John 17:3
Now this is eternal life: that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent.

Think quality, not just quantity - life with God

"The gospel’s final aim is not heaven but loyal obedience to Jesus the king in a new era – an era characterized by everlasting life...We are on steadier biblical ground if we say a key gospel aim is everlasting resurrection life rather than heaven." – Matthew Bates

Romans 1:5 & 16:25-27
Paul bookends Romans with the aim of obedience.

Holy Spirit Fruit
Jesus, with the father, have sent the Spirit to dwell in us.

1 Cor 12:3
3 Therefore I want you to know that no one who is speaking by the Spirit of God says, “Jesus be cursed,” and no one can say, “Jesus is Lord,” except by the Holy Spirit.

John 15 - those who abide produce fruit

Gal 5:22-23
Fruit of the Spirit

This is the vision

Rev 5:9-10
God’s royal priest hood – image bearing humans

Rev 21:3 – look, God has come to dwell with humans
"The large story of scripture for the early Christians in which they lived – is about God the creator coming to live with his human creatures on earth." - NT Wright

Questions like…what should we do?

HOW SHOULD WE RESPOND TO THE GOSPEL THAT JESUS IS THE SAVING KING?

Acts 2:36-39 - Peter's Pentecost Sermon Conclusion
36 “Therefore let all Israel be assured of this: God has made this Jesus, whom you crucified, both Lord and the Christ.”

37 When the people heard this, they were cut to the heart and said to Peter and the other apostles, “Brothers, what shall we do?”

38 Peter replied, “Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. 39 The promise is for you and your children and for all who are far off—for all whom the Lord our God will call.”

Acts 4:12
Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to mankind by which we must be saved.

Once you decide
Then you start living it.
Lord’s Prayer is a great orienting tool.

Our Father in heaven,
hallowed be your name,
your kingdom come,
your will be done,
on earth as in heaven.

Give us today our daily bread.
Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us.
Lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil.

For yours is the kingdom, the power and the glory,
forever and ever.
Amen.
