2023_03_26 Four Cups; The Cup of Deliverance

The story of Moses, the ten plagues, and the exodus from Egypt is recognized each year as a reminder of God’s deliverance of Israel from the bondage of slavery. This celebration is called the Passover. While this may appear to be a Hebrew festivity, or an Old Testament story, Jesus takes the Passover seriously throughout the gospels. It is during the Passover that we find our sacrament of Communion. Understanding the Passover continues to be relevant for Christians today as the story reflects the same deliverance from bondage that we find in Jesus Christ. While each element of the Passover is significant, the four cups used throughout the remembrancre tell us the story of Jesus in a different way. Each cup represents a promise given in Exodus 6:6-7…promises that were true to God’s people then and are still true for us today. As we discover the meaning in each cup we will also become aware of four promises God continues to fulfill in our lives today.

Scripture and Message Notes for our current series - Four Cups
Week 2 - The Cup of Deliverance

The Four "I Wills..."
1. I will bring you out from under the yoke of the Egyptians.
2. I will free you from being slaves.
3. I will redeem you with an outstretched arm.
4. I will take you as my own people and I will be your God.
"The Egypt in Me"
Exodus records 14 instances of the Israelites complaining...wanting to go back to Egypt, back to slavery. Just as God has to take us out of Egypt, God has to get the Egypt out of us!
Do I long for the very things that keep me bound?
"Believed" - pistis, meaning faith, assurance, founded in conviction, life/ action changing
(from the root pisteuo, John 3:16...for whoever "believes")
You cannot have a fulfilled tomorrow while dragging yesterday behind you.
What am I holding onto that I may need to let go in order to find deliverance?
