PRAYING MEN OF THE BIBLE MARCH 8, 2023
#3 ABRAHAM – THE MAN OF PRAYER

Oh for determined men and women, who will rise early and really burn out for God. Oh for a faith that will sweep into heaven with the early dawning of the morning and have ships from a shoreless sea loaded in the soul’s harbor ere the ordinary laborer has knocked the dew from his scythe or the huckster has turned from his pallet of straw to spread nature’s treasures of fruit before the early buyers. Rev. Homer W. Hodge

SCRIPTURE

Book of Genesis chapters 11-25

Central Truth: Worship and prayer were at the core of Abraham’s life and his first and regular response to the Lord’s direction and commands.

Who was Abram?

1/ Abram was the son of Terah who was from the family line of Shem through Noah.

2/ Abram was called by God.

Genesis 12:1-3 The Lord had said to Abram, “Go from your country, your people and your father’s household to the land I will show you. 2 “I will make you into a great nation, and I will bless you; I will make your name great, and you will be a blessing. 3 I will bless those who bless you, and whoever curses you I will curse; and all peoples on earth will be blessed through you.”

3/ He was the “friend of God” and “the father of the faithful.”

Isaiah 41:8 “But you, Israel, my servant, Jacob, whom I have chosen, descendants of Abraham my friend.

Romans 4:16 Therefore, the promise comes by faith, so that it may be by grace and may be guaranteed to all Abraham’s offspring—not only to those who are of the law but also to those who have the faith of Abraham. He is the father of us all.

Christian Life Lessons

2/ A life of prayerfulness is one that is full of testing, blessing, and covenant with God.

3/ A life of prayerlessness is one of confusion, misery, and defeat.

PRAYING MEN OF THE BIBLE
#4 MOSES – THE MIGHTY INTERCESSOR

Intercessory Prayer is a powerful means of grace to the praying man. Martyn observes that at times of inward dryness and depression, he had often found a delightful revival in the act of praying for others for their conversion, or sanctification, or prosperity in the work of the Lord. His dealing with God for them about these gifts and blessings were for himself the divinely natural channel of a renewed insight into his own part and lot in Christ, into Christ as his own rest and power, into the “perfect freedom” of an entire yielding of himself to his Master for His work. Bishop Handley C.G. Moule

SCRIPTURE

Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy

Central Truth: The more intimate we are with God, the more necessary and vital prayer becomes.

Who was Moses?

1/ Moses was born of a man from the tribe of Levi who had married a Levite woman during the time of the oppression of the Hebrews from Pharaoh, king of Egypt.

2/ Moses was rescued by Pharaoh’s daughter and raised in the palaces of Egypt.

3/ Moses would be the one who would deliver Israel form Egyptian bondage. He would also at God’s direction, help to establish the civil, ceremonial and covenant laws of Israel.

What did Moses do?

1/ Moses was a great listener.

2/ Moses had tremendous faith.

3/ Moses centered his prayers on the basis of God’s reputation.

4/ Moses was willing to identify himself with the people for whom he prayed.

How was prayer a priority in the life of Moses?

1/ He spent countless hours and days in God’s presence.

2/ He stood as an intercessor between God’s wrath and the people of Israel.

Christian Life Lessons

1/ Prayer unites with the purposes of God and lays itself out to secure those purposes.

2/ Not only is prayer the source of supply and support, it is a compassionate conduit through which the pity and patience of God can flow.

3/ Prayer restrains God’s wrath, allowing mercy to rejoice against judgement!
