New Year - Old Wisdom

BIG IDEA:
Wisdom = Seeing life clearly through the lens of Scripture.

These are the proverbs of Solomon, David’s son, king of Israel. Their purpose is to teach people wisdom and discipline, to help them understand the insights of the wise. Their purpose is to teach people to live disciplined and successful lives, to help them do what is right, just, and fair.
Proverbs 1:1–3

My child, listen to what I say, and treasure my commands. Tune your ears to wisdom and concentrate on understanding. Cry out for insight, and ask for understanding. Search for them as you would for silver; seek them like hidden treasures. Then you will understand what it means to fear the Lord, and you will gain knowledge of God. For the Lord grants wisdom! From his mouth come knowledge and understanding.
Proverbs 2:1–6 (NLT)

Wisdom…
1) comes from GOD.
2) not the same as KNOWLEDGE.
3) is very PRACTICAL.

A gossip betrays a confidence; so avoid anyone who talks too much.
Proverbs 20:19 (NIV)

Don’t visit your neighbors too often, or you will wear out your welcome.
Proverbs 25:17 (NLT)

As a dog returns to its vomit, so fools repeat their folly.
Proverbs 26:11 (NIV)

4) should be PURSUED.
5) has huge BENEFITS.

He grants a treasure of common sense to the honest. He is a shield to those who walk with integrity. He guards the paths of the just and protects those who are faithful to him. Then you will understand what is right, just, and fair, and you will find the right way to go. For wisdom will enter your heart, and knowledge will fill you with joy. Wise choices will watch over you. Understanding will keep you safe. Wisdom will save you from evil people, from those whose words are twisted.
Proverbs 2:7–12 (NLT)

Pursue wisdom …
▪in your relationships.

Whoever walks with the wise becomes wise, but the companion of fools will suffer harm. Proverbs 13:20 (ESV)

▪with your time.

Be very careful, then, how you live—not as unwise but as wise, making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil.
Ephesians 5:15–16 (NIV)

▪with your words.

Wise words satisfy like a good meal; the right words bring satisfaction. The tongue can bring death or life; those who love to talk will reap the consequences.
Proverbs 18:20–21 (NLT)

Is this the wise thing to do?
