#2. WHAT IF THE SKY FALLS?
(Dealing with the Possibility of Natural Disasters)

Psalm 46:1-3 NIV God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea, though its waters roar and foam and the mountains quake with their surging.

I. Job ─ Four disasters in one day

A. Job was not being punished.

1. A model family

2. A God-centered life

3. A blessed existence

4. An influential person

B. Job was being attacked.

1. Job 1:8-12 NIV Then the Lord said to Satan, “Have you considered my servant Job? There is no one on earth like him; he is blameless and upright, a man who fears God and shuns evil.” 9“Does Job fear God for nothing?” Satan replied. 10“Have you not put a hedge around him and his household and everything he has? You have blessed the work of his hands, so that his flocks and herds are spread throughout the land. 11But now stretch out your hand and strike everything he has, and he will surely curse you to your face.” 12The Lord said to Satan, “Very well, then, everything he has is in your power, but on the man himself do not lay a finger.” Then Satan went out from the presence of the Lord.

C. It is not likely that we will be able to correctly discern between attacks, punishment, and the natural order of a broken world.

1. Luke 13:1-5 NIV “Now there were some present at that time who told Jesus about the Galileans whose blood Pilate had mixed with their sacrifices. 2Jesus answered, “Do you think that these Galileans were worse sinners than all the other Galileans
because they suffered this way? 3I tell you, no! But unless you repent, you too will all perish. 4Or those eighteen who died when the tower in Siloam fell on them—do you think they were more guilty than all the others living in Jerusalem? 5I tell you, no! But unless you repent, you too will all perish.”

II. What disasters teach us about God

A. God is the creator and controller of nature.

1. Psalm 135:6-7 NIV The Lord does whatever pleases him, in the heavens and on the earth, in the seas and all their depths. 7 He makes clouds rise from the ends of the earth; he sends lightning with the rain and brings out the wind from his storehouses.

2. Matthew 5:45 NIV that you may be children of your Father in heaven. He causes his sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous.

B. God can use nature to enforce His purposes.

1. God sent judgment upon Korah, Dathan, and Abiram. (Numbers 16:32)

2. God destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah with fire and brimstone. (Genesis 19:24)

3. God sent plagues to destroy Egypt. (Exodus 7-12)

4. God sent a plague that killed 70,000 people because of David’s sin. (2 Samuel 24:15)

5. God sent a storm because of Jonah’s rebellion. (Jonah 1:4-17)

6. God sent natural disasters to judge Israel for her many sins. (Amos 4:6-11)

C. God remains just and good, even when He uses natural disasters to judge sinful man.

D. God’s plan is never thwarted by natural disasters. He remains in control.

III. What disasters teach us about ourselves

A. We need to turn from our sin.

B. We need to be thankful for God’s goodness.

C. We need to care for the hurting.

D. We need to trust in God’s loving promise.

E. We need to rely on God’s presence and power.

We thank you for taking hold of them with your righteous mighty right hand of justice, power, victory and salvation! Give to them a spirit of wisdom, revelation, and discernment in every decision they make. Send your Word to heal them and give them victory in every place where the enemy is resisting or attacking them. Fill them anew with Your Spirit. Refresh and strengthen them with Your incomparably great power according to your glorious might. May they have great endurance and patience, bearing fruit in every good work and joyfully giving thanks to you, in all things!
