TYPOLOGY: EXODUS – DEUTERONOMY MISC AUGUST 10, 2022
DEFINING BIBLICAL TYPOLOGY
Typology: a person, office, place, institution, event, or thing in salvation history that anticipates, shares correspondences with, escalates toward, and resolves in Jesus
EXODUS
1/ The Sabbath Day brought earthly rest, just as Jesus brings inner rest.
“Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy. Six days you shall labor and do all your work, but the seventh day is a sabbath to the Lord your God. On it you shall not do any work, neither you, nor your son or daughter, nor your male or female servant, nor your animals, nor any foreigner residing in your towns.” Exodus 20:8-11, NIV
“(The Egyptian gods were) the gods of insatiable productivity.” Walter Brueggemann
Then Jesus said, “Come to Me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest.” Matthew 11:28, NLT
2/ The Sabbath Day brought earthly rest, just as Jesus brings eternal rest.
So there is a special rest still waiting for the people of God. Hebrews 4:9, NLT
“(This eternal rest) to be spent in Heaven; in which the saints, happy in souls and body, will rest in God from the sins, calamities, and miseries of this life.” Francis Turretin
3/ The Tabernacle was the place of God’s dwelling, just as we are the place of God’s dwelling.
Then have them make a sanctuary for Me, and I will dwell among them. Exodus 25:8, NIV
The Word became flesh and tabernacled among us. John 1:14, Paraphrase
…your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you… 1 Corinthians 6:19, NIV
4/ The Levites were mediators between God and man, just as Jesus is a mediator between God and man.
Exodus 40:12-15
For there is one God and one mediator between God and mankind, the man Christ Jesus… 1 Timothy 2:5, NIV
LEVITICUS
1/ The sacrificial system offered a temporary covering of sin, just as Jesus offers a permanent covering of sin.
(In shedding the blood of a bull) the priest will make atonement for the community, and they will be forgiven. Leviticus 4:20, NIV
It is impossible for the blood of bulls and goats to take away sins. Hebrews 10:4, NIV
If we confess our sins, He is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 1 John 1:9, NIV
2/ The Day of Atonement allowed access into the Holy of Holies, just as Jesus allows access into the Holy of Holies.
Leviticus 16
He did not enter by means of the blood of goats and calves; but He entered the Most Holy Place once for all by His own blood, thus obtaining eternal redemption. Hebrews 9:12
3/ The feasts offered a periodic connection with God, yet Jesus offers a permanent connection with God.
Leviticus 23
Passover: Jesus is the protection from judgment.
Unleavened: Jesus is the sinless sacrifice.
First Fruits: Jesus is the first fruit of those who will rise.
Pentecost: Jesus is the harvester of souls.
Trumpet: Jesus returns at the trumpet blast.
Atonement: Jesus’ sacrifice tore the veil.
Tabernacle: Jesus tabernacled with humankind.
Colossians 2:16-17
NUMBERS
1/ The opening of the earth judged the wicked, just as Jesus will judge the wicked.
As soon as he finished saying all this, the ground under them split apart and the earth opened its mouth and swallowed them and their households, and all those associated with Korah, together with their possessions. They went down alive into the realm of the dead, with everything they owned; the earth closed over them, and they perished and were gone from the community. Numbers 16:31-33, NIV
And I saw the dead, great and small, standing before the throne, and books were opened. Another book was opened, which is the book of life. Anyone whose name was not found written in the book of life was thrown into the lake of fire. Revelations 20:12, 15, NIV
DEUTERONOMY
1/ The blessing and curses of the covenant were earthly informants, just as the blessing and curses of Jesus are eternal informants.
Deuteronomy 28
Matthew 25:34; Matthew 25:41
“They foreshadow the fullness of life and the fullness of destruction that await believers and unbelievers.” Chase

TYPOLOGY: JOSHUA – RUTH MISC AUGUST 10, 2022
DEFINING BIBLICAL TYPOLOGY
Typology: a person, office, place, institution, event, or thing in salvation history that anticipates, shares correspondences with, escalates toward, and resolves in Jesus
JOSHUA
1/ Joshua took Israel into their inheritance, just as Jesus takes us into our eternal inheritance.
Be strong and courageous, because you will lead these people to inherit the land I swore to their ancestors to give them. Joshua 1:7, NIV
“You shall call His name Jesus, for He will save their people form their sins.” Matthew 1:21
2/ Israel had to conquer people, just as Jesus had to conquer principalities.
Joshua 1-24
The reason the Son of God appeared was to destroy the devil’s work. 1 John 3:8, NIV
3/ Judgment passed over Rahab because of scarlet, just as judgment passes over us because of scarlet.
Before they left, the men told her, “We will be bound by the oath we have taken only if you follow these instructions. When we come into the land (to bring judgment), you must leave this scarlet rope hanging from the window through which you let us down. And all your family members…must be here inside the house (to be saved).” Josh 2:17-18, NLT
“Behold, the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!” John 1:29, NIV
JUDGES
1/ The judges served as delivers for the people, just as Jesus serves as a Deliver for us.
Whenever the Lord raised up a judge for them, He was with the judge and saved them out of the hands of their enemies as long as the judge lived… Judges 2:18, NIV
So Christ has truly set us free. Now make sure that you stay free, and don’t get tied up again in slavery to the law. Galatians 5:1, NLT
2/ Samson’s death brought death to many, yet Jesus’ death brought life to many.
Then he pushed with all his might, and down came the temple on the rulers and all the people in it. Thus he killed many more when he died than while he lived. Judges 16:30
…for all who receive (grace) will live in triumph over sin and death through this one man, Jesus Christ. Romans 5:17
3/ People did what was right in their own eyes in Judges, just as people will do what is right in their own eyes in the last days.
In those days there was no king in Israel. Everyone did what was right in his own eyes. Judges 21:25, ESV
But mark this: There will be terrible times in the last days. People will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boastful, proud, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, without love, unforgiving, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not lovers of the truth, treacherous, rash, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God—having a form of godliness but denying its power. Have nothing to do with such people. 2 Timothy 3:1-5, NIV
RUTH
1/ Boaz redeemed Ruth, just as Jesus redeems us.
Ruth 3
For you know that it was not with perishable things such as silver or gold that you were redeemed from the empty way of life handed down to you from your ancestors, but with the precious blood of Christ, a lamb without blemish or defect. 1 Peter 1:18-19
