Living Generously – Week 4
The Enemy of Generosity
Luke 12:13-21

Sermon Idea
Generosity overcomes greed by making us aware of the needs of others.

Outline:

1.Greed - A Real and Present Danger

13 Now someone in the crowd said to Him, “Teacher, tell my brother to divide the family inheritance with me.” 14 But He said to him, You there—who appointed Me a judge or arbitrator over the two of you?” 15 But He said to them, “Beware, and be on your guard against every form of greed; for not even when one is affluent does his life consist of his possessions.”

2.The Language of Greed

16 And He told them a parable, saying, “The land of a rich man was very productive. 17 And he began thinking to himself, saying, ‘What shall I do, since I have no place to store my crops?’ 18 And he said, ‘This is what I will do: I will tear down my barns and build larger ones, and I will store all my grain and my goods there
- The language of greed always starts with “I”

3.The Traps of Greed
19 And I will say to myself, “You have many goods stored up for many years to come; relax, eat, drink, and enjoy yourself!”’ 20 But God said to him, ‘You fool! This very night your soul is demanded of you; and as for all that you have prepared, who will own it now?’ 21 Such is the one who stores up treasure for himself and is not rich in relation to God.”

A. Greed reduces your life to a collection of things
B. Greed ruins people

1 Timothy 6:9-10
9 But those who want to get rich fall into temptation and a trap, and many foolish and harmful desires which plunge people into ruin and destruction. 10 For the love of money is a root of all sorts of evil, and some by longing for it have wandered away from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs.

4.The Antidote to Greed
Luke 6:38 NASB
38 Give, and it will be given to you. They will [a]pour into your lap a good measure—pressed down, shaken together, and running over. For by your standard of measure it will be measured to you in return.

— Antidote - a remedy to counteract the effects of poison
— Generosity overcomes greed by making us aware of the needs of others.
— When I operate in greed, I think only of myself; When I’m generous, I think about others.
